Our goal is to open the lawn at the beginning of May. The sod needs some time to establish its roots and grow strong so it will stay healthy throughout the summer.

You are right, we have shown a lot of Hitchcock films in the past and sometimes two in one season, such as Lifeboat and The Apartment in 2008, and Bus Stop and Psycho in 2007. Other Hitchcock films we have screened include The Birds (2006), Suspicion (2005), Dial M For Murger (2004), Shadow Of A Doubt (2003), The Man Who Knew Too Much (2002), Rear Window (2001), Vertigo (1997), To Catch A Theif (1996), and Strangers On A Train (1995), to name a few! Are there any of his films in particular that you are hoping to see in the park?

Thank you for your comment. We will be implementing a recycling program during the spring of 2010 when we launch the new design in the park. The recycling units will be blue and light green, the standard NYC colors for plastic and paper recycling. They will also have different openings in the lids.

The litter receptacle parts are all powder-coated aluminum castings or spun stainless-steel, both are outdoor grade materials. The powder-coating process produces a finish that is extremely strong and durable; it is by far the hardest finish available for outdoor applications in the market today. The flip-up lid allows our sanitation workers to easily remove the plastic bags from the inner steel-mesh liner to empty the trash. The loops on the top double as handles to move the receptacles when necessary. The inner steel-mesh liners can be also removed for cleaning when necessary. The three models were designed and developed to be mass produced so they are all equally easy to replicate.

The cans are bottom heavy already but we plan to add more weight if necessary. So far it has not been a problem. All the parts are aluminum castings.

There is no need for the users to touch or lift the flip-up lids to use the cans, you just through the trash in as you would in any other trashcan. The lids are only used by our sanitation workers when there is a need to remove the steel mesh liners to empty the trash. The old receptacles in the park also have flip-up lids and we had very few problems with them over the years. The new cans build on that experience and improve the mechanism. Our Director of Sanitation and the workers were involved in the design and development process from the beginning.

Thank you for your comment. To answer your question, this is not where your tax dollars go. Bryant Park Corporation is a not-for-profit private management company that does not receive any city money. The park is funded entirely by earned income.

The stems are powder-coated aluminum castings. The powder-coating process produces a finish that is extremely strong and durable. When the paint does start to show scratches we will implement a maintenance program for the receptacles.
The receptacles will be weighted down because we moved them very often to accommodate different activities and events.
The color vote is just for the receptacles at this point.

Hi Daniel,

Thank you for your comment. The Pond at Bryant Park is a free admission skating rink and it is free for everyone. You are correct that Bryant Park Corporation is a not-for-profit organization, however Upsilon Ventures, the company that produces and manages the rink, is not.

There were two main objectives behind the implementation of The Pond Fast Pass this year and they were both driven by the demands of Pond users; 1) to provide a premium offering, and 2) to satisfy groups of 9 or fewer people who wish to secure a specific time and date to access the ice, just as The Pond's group reservation policy does for groups of 10 or more people.

The goal is not to squeeze extra money from those who can't afford it, but to respond to the requests of visitors to The Pond and offer an additional, optional service.

Information about the tree lighting event has been posted on The Pond's website at http://www.thepondatbryantp.... The event is from 7pm to 8pm on Friday, December 4th, and will feature live music and ice skating performances.

Hot drinks have been added to the menu, as well as new snacks like popcorn and chili. The entire 'wichcraft menu from the Bryant Park kiosks is also now available at the Porch, which includes sandwiches, salads, and soups.

At this time a date has not been set for the tree lighting in Bryant Park. Traditionally, the event has been held in the last week of November or first week of December. Thank you to everyone who shared an opinion on this issue. Bryant Park is subject to the policies of NYC's Department of Parks and Recreation, but as managers of the space we try to take comments from park users into consideration before implementing any changes to our regulations. It's clear that people feel very strongly on both sides of this issue. It will be interesting to see what happens to the proposed ban on smoking in parks.
