Damn this was good. You’ve always been a huge inspo to me.

I founded a t-shirt brand about 15 years ago that quickly evolved into a lifestyle blog. Before I knew it, brands were flying me all across the country to blogger summits and sending me cool shit to review. Shortly after, the noise came in. I started writing for my followers and stopped writing for myself.

Turns out, blogging about other people’s cool stuff isn’t what I wanted to do with my life. Now I’m realigned with what matters most to me. I work in marketing using the skills I gained from the blogging days while honing my crafts as an artist and storyteller.

Your insight is just as valuable to me now as it was all those years ago.

Yeah, i was kind of like that for a long time until I got into Original Sin and it pulled me back in. If I had to recommend just one Marvel book to you, I'd say get your hands on the Matt Fraction and David Aja run of Hawkeye. The hardcover edition of the first trade is especially sexy. I avoided the hype for a year or so because Hawkeye always seemed kind of corny to me, but it's extraordinarily deep with a lot of layered characters for a Marvel book.

As for ads, they never really bothered me, but continuity can definitely suck. A lot of times bigger crossover events can feel editorial - you can totally see that the story wasn't conceived for the purpose of having a good story, but for the purpose of selling other titles. Kind of stinky, but there's some great creative teams who take those editorial concepts and turn them into terrific story-arcs like what happened with Thor no longer being worthy of his hammer in Original Sin - the new Thor book kicks freaking ass! Thor gets his arm chopped off and a dark elf wears it around his neck like a badass!!! I have the luxury of getting all my comics for free, but I definitely sympathize with those who have to budget which books they can and can't get each week.

As for indie stuff, I was reading Goners for a while ( killer art!), I read Lumberjanes, and I borrowed the first Locke and Key trade from a friend who hyped it up big time, but I just thought it was okay. I recently read the first issue of Not Like Us from Image which was pretty cool. Saga and Black Science are my favorite indies by far and I'm picking up the Deadly class trade that just came out soon. I'd be able to read more indie stuff if my local comic shop got first issues in on a more regular basis. If you want something there, you have to order it. I prefer going into a comic shop to DISCOVER new comics. I hate having to know what's coming out ahead of time so that I can special order it. </rant>

I got Blacksad for Valentine's day and it's pretty incredible. I'd highly recommend it to aspire comic artists because the art is mind-blowing.
