We have sales tax and it actually throws off a lot more captured revenue than one would think. Tires, tubes and chains are disposable and taxable. Our gas is sandwiches and donuts and we buy a lot of them.

Our presence improves a lot of retail outcomes. Not claiming that we’re magical, but cyclists interact more with the world in terms of journeying than the usual driver (going to pre-determined places only) because we’re going slower and we notice more places. So it becomes something akin to foot traffic.

Also, bike lanes and walkways are inexpensive to maintain (for that matter, so is any byway that doesn’t have trailer trucks on it) and U.S. DOT gives out grants left and right to pay for half the cost of anything.

U.S. DOT also gives out 80% of the cost of expressways to states. Which is how we get a lot of those even though they’re wildly more expensive. It’s fine (there’s only slightly too many of them) but these are all things to think about when talking about how stuff gets paid for. Drivers and cyclists get subsidized out of general tax collections. Doesn’t need to be a contest about “how much” either way. What matters is that people aren’t going to bike and walk if you give them nowhere to do it. Shortsighted to make everything about driving because driving quickly becomes dissatisfying and annoying in suburbs because of traffic and parking. Nobody’s solved this except in towns with just 3,000 people and plenty of cheap land.

Here's the thing: isn't this all 10 miles from Philly? Why is that area so rural and special when actually most of New Jersey is suburban and densely populated? Isn't the main problem with bikes on the road in NJ that there are a ton of drivers on all the roads all the time who think there isn't room for anything else? And people have had bikes in suburbia for 150+ years. Just sounds like people don't have patience while driving anymore. And that sounds like a driving problem, not a bicycle problem.

"You seem to have a chip on your shoulder" no, I just don't want to die because the state trusted drivers and bicycles to share slower roads & some drivers like you decided they could never go slow or never ignore the opportunity to put a cyclist in the hospital.

UPS and Amazon are delivering all of their packages in NYC by bicycle and are rolling this out to other major cities. UPS is fiddling with it. It makes it easier to pull up to buildings and get in/get out. Doesn't make sense for huge delivery territories but... your absolute claims on this are laughably wrong. "Car great! Bike not great! Oook ook!" If bicycles really are so infinitesimal in count then why do you seem so mad and motivated to come tell them off in the comments? Nothing going on today in SD2's life?

Let's be direct: the ask is really "give us a bicycle lane network, doesn't have to be perfect but kind of has to have a general point A-to-B setup between towns and counties". Nobody wants to ride on a highway like this if there are quality trails.

And in the northeast this is usually a pretty simple ask because there are lots of old rail corridors and country roads with shoulders and what not, and also joggers and strollers and lollying seniors love that stuff (if it's wide enough to let people pass) so a connecting trail gets a lot of use when it is built. You don't even have to take road lanes for it in most cases. State should do its thing by establishing a parallel trail on existing pavement with a couple of those sixty billion movable concrete dividers they're sitting on, and THEN talk about the main roadway of a state route becoming off-limits to bike/ped. Not only does it seem to be the opposite order here, but they're doing it in an area with serious existing injury/death problems so it should be a priority to improve access. The amount of effort they're going through to get individual municipalities to override all this stuff but zero talk about multi-use trails being provided or pointed out...

You've proven my point. "Society is built around the supremacy of motor vehicles" not just that the first priority is to facilitate transport, but that everyone else needs to pack it in or die.

No bicyclist wants to take over part of the Turnpike. What they want is not for 100% of the roads to have this logic applied to them. And if you think that isn't true then maybe you should pull up a map of NJ-55 and the parallel county roads.

The "expressway" thing is all about drivers wanting roads to be formatted that way. Every road is ridable by a bicycle. It's drivers who make the choice that some roads are for them and other roads are... also for them. Actually you've already chosen all roads to be for drivers only, including local streets in front of schools where you use your pickup trucks to make hamburger meat out of kids who might wander into the street. And then when you get a ticket for that you scream "it's just a cash grab"

Note that if RR is a producer on a film - and he's usually a lead producer, not a title collector - he can, in fact, do this without it being a diva actor thing.

If he thinks a choice would make a movie better... why is he obligated as a producer to be "nice" and make the movie worse?

Does he tend to make bad choices putting friends into roles? His box office revenues since becoming mogul-ish would indicate otherwise.

I would love to see a group of entertainment lawyers put together a leading-man action/comedy
