Surely they could garner votes there? The Irish Unionist Party perhaps? The paradox for them would be that they'd be inadvertently working towards a re-unification project. But the experience of politically working outside the land of diminishing returns aka the sick canties could breathe life into the old dog.
You're absolutely correct about the prognosis for Unionism...it's always been a stultified ethos; inward looking and suspicious of change. It's destiny is that it will fail and it's people will thrive in the country of their birth...Ireland.

Re: Tony Greenstein's Blog: Open Letter to John Mann MP from a 90 year old Jewish Doctor

Dr Sam Glatt, I commend you for your clarity of vision in regard to John Mann's recent behaviour. I do hope that Mr Mann will listen to your valid criticism and align himself now with the interests of the Labour Party and it's twice elected leader. I believe that there will be a Spring General Election 2017 to decide the Brexit issue and Labour has every chance of winning when are united under Jeremy Corbyn and sticking it to the Tories.

Re: Tony Greenstein's Blog: The Jewish Labour Movement and its Political Lynching of Jackie Walker

The truth is that Jackie Walker is a humanitarian who stands up for all human beings who are subject to physical and mental crimes from others who have temporal power over them. I commend her for her bravery and clarity of judgement. Great article Tony Greenstein.

Re: Bangladesh Board Proposes 77% Wage Increase

These hard working people are being exploited by everyone in the world, we in the west should be ready to pay more for our clothes, the quality of the product they produce is first class. I see this as the first step in helping these workers and people to live a better life.

Re: Unionist Charter | Sinn Féin

Hello again

We are singing from the same hymn sheet in this matter. Far better for the Irish to determine their own destiny and government. Our Unionist brothers in the North have been and no doubt will contine to be a "hard nut" to crack. Witness the back sliding that Peter Robinson is attempting to do in the assembly, watching over his shoulder at the TUV and Jim Allistair's anti-vote in the European election.

As for Westminster and the English, I do not now, nor ever will trust them. They are the original imperialists and Northern Ireland is the original colony.

Honest dealings and standing firm in our aim for a free and truly united Ireland will see us reach our "promised land." Unionism is what it is, if I had a magic wand and could wave it and make them all good Irishmen then I would do that and there would not be a problem in this land of ours.

As we are well aware the reality is somewhat different and this is no fairy story. Yet I honestly believe that we have to find a consensus with our neighbours in the six counties if we are to move the situation further forward. The solution lies here in the province, not in Westminster.

Look after your good self and keep in touch.

Brian Mullan.

Re: Unionist Charter | Sinn Féin

Hello

I can only say that I am glad to hear from a fellow citizen of Ireland. Keep voting and talking to everyone that you know about this issue. It can not be too far off that we can hold our heads as equals in this land. Two flags for two peoples is the way forward. If our Unionist neighbours are willing to share then they can have their rights guaranteed for ever as far as I am concerned. I do not wish to replace one tyranny with another.

I do not speak Irish, I was taught it at Primary School for six weeks by a sub-teacher for one term. I loved it, I have thought about trying to learn my native tongue and perhaps I will. We need the Irish Language Act passed now and I hope that Sinn Fein are pressing for this. I believe that they are.

On a separate subject. Did you hear that the SNP plan to hold a referendum on Scottish independence in 2010? What shape the Union if Scotland secedes?

Brian Mullan.

Re: Ombudsman report into TASER incident ‘most disappointing and flawed’ | Sinn Féin

The Ombudsman has failed in its duty to the public regarding this matter. The Police clearly were anxious to find out the efficacy of their new "toy." These weapons will have to be banned as soon as possible.

Re: Adams comments on Orange Order failure to engage | Sinn Féin

President Adams is correct in his estimation of the orangemen's willingness to engage in constructive dialogue. Nationalists keep the high ground and ask the orangemen to stop burning our National Flag on their bonfires during their marching season.

Brian Mullan.

Re: A Bridge to the Future 1998 | Sinn Féin

"They (Nationalists) know that equal treatment for symbolic political expression is politically important in itself but are not prepared to substitute symbolism for substance"

Eleven years on from this statement and much progress has been made in giving Nationalists a place in a power-sharing government in the six counties. Not an ideal postion yet on the road to a democratic united Ireland but still as part of the transition of change we have to recognise that the situation has moved forward.

Yet as Irish Citizens we still do not have our national flag:The Tricolour flying over our government buildings. The Union Flag should not still be flying on this part of Ireland on it's own. We should have our Tricolour flying also and as soon as possible. This will cement our Irish identity in the six counties and let the Unionist know that they are in a land where they have no choice but to share power.

Brian Mullan.

Re: Unionist Charter | Sinn Féin

"Two flags for two peoples"

Why is our flag not flying over government buildings in the six counties yet? I recently seen our Tricolour flying in the north, over an eleventh night bonfire! actually there was two of them.

I have voted for sinn fein all my life and I am satisfied that we are making progress towards a United Ireland. However I am impatient towards seeing my Irishness recognised as part of the government in the six counties. Why can't we have our Tricolour flying over government buildings here. The sooner the better. The Union Flag should not be flying here on it's own, the sooner the two fly together, the sooner each tradition accepts the full rights of the other.

Brian Mullan.
