I guess I tripped over the phrase "second life" since the two versions are rather similar (and Tears was released only one week before Clapton recorded Unplugged). Regardless, really enjoyed the piece. MTV Unplugged is, in my opinion, what the series intended to accomplish: highlighting the sharp contrast between a band's regular sound and its stripped down form. It's brilliant music.

Re: 20 Years Later: The Discomforting Brilliance of Unplugged in New York

When you write, "Clapton’s delicate 'Tears In Heaven' was given a second life by his Unplugged rendition," do you mean the version of "Layla" played in that session?

Re: Perfect Storm of Hype: Politicians, the media and the Hurricane Irene apocalypse that never was

I live in Pitt County, where we had two storm-related deaths. We still have thousands without power here, hundreds displaced and hundreds of homes damaged or destroyed. One county over, in Beaufort, they have much of the same, plus a boil-water order in effect because the water system is compromised. We are about 75 miles from the ocean. While I recognize that living on the coastal plain means we're going to have these types of events, this hurricane was far worse than expected. The Cedar Island ferry station reported a wind gust of 115 mph. While not sustained, this was a surprisingly strong Category 1. It's a mess here.

Re: Perfect Storm of Hype: Politicians, the media and the Hurricane Irene apocalypse that never was

If everyone on this thread could donate $10 to the Red Cross for recovery efforts here in eastern North Carolina, we sure would appreciate it. Or, if you'd like to criticize the media for over-hyping the storm, how about you come visit since we could use an extra set of hands to collect debris? I should mention that you probably want to bring a chainsaw and a generator since the storm felled a ton of trees and we've got 500k people without power right now.

You may now return to your regularly scheduled "It's Obama's/the GOP's fault" inanity.

Re: http://briancolligan.tumblr.com/post/9418323141

Apparently all my comments were filtered to spam, so I just got this today (Sunday). Looks like we may have a second flood tour in the works. Smartass.

Re: http://briancolligan.tumblr.com/post/9474628500

Actually, Pitt County wasn't evacuated, nor was ECU. We're about 75 miles from the coast and we're even included in the governor's initial emergency declaration when it was issued on Friday. ECU cancelled classes after 3 p.m. on Friday, but there was never any mandatory direction to leave.

Sorry I didn't see your comment earlier, or I would have provided the information sooner. We still have 12k without power, down from 45k midday on Saturday, so conditions are improving rapidly. It's much better here than along the coast.

Hope everything is well with your nephew.

Re: http://briancolligan.tumblr.com/post/7655164754

Agreed.Important point of clarification.

Re: http://briancolligan.tumblr.com/post/7312761558

How about ...

Howard Jones: By now, you have probably touched Howard Jones.

Re: http://briancolligan.tumblr.com/post/6870224665

Eh, it's OK, I guess.

Re: http://briancolligan.tumblr.com/post/6765510996

Believe me, I pushed for complete saturation I-Team coverage of this.

Re: http://briancolligan.tumblr.com/post/6760567476

Awwwwwww yeah.

Re: http://briancolligan.tumblr.com/post/6151173754

OK. Not at all. But when you compare a politician in America who does something you don't like to one of the most brutal and murderous bastards to ever walk the earth, it's makes it hard for people to take your argument seriously. I contend that the comparison is counterproductive. Believe me, I'm not trying to pigeonhole Hitler.

Re: Post 3,000

"You people" is like "youse people" in the northeast and "y'all" where I live, but more accessible.

Re: Following up on the Duke, er, dook fan…

That was the No. 1-ranked Duke Blue Devils storming the court at home after beating the 5-2 Hokies.

Dook "fans" are hilarious.

Re: http://briancolligan.tumblr.com/post/3184065669

Sunday, Monday, Habib Beye
Tuesday, Wednesday, Habib Beye
Thursday, Friday, Habib Beye
Saturday, Habib Beye, rocking all week with you!

Re: http://briancolligan.tumblr.com/post/3072883526

Yeah, I corrected the quote on my Facebook and included the more accurate one, but hadn't added a note here.
