It has no "measurable ROI" outside the context of what our schema is doing for the business. Consumer empowerment is an approach to engagement, not a measurement of that engagement.

Jason, I love this article so very much. I appreciate a good, cynical view of our oftentimes too touchy-feely line of work that can easily become this navel-gazing mutual admiration society. PR people more than maybe any other group have to work very hard to keep their eyes on the prize.

Re: Soul of a New Business

Chris, this post brought to mind a chat I was fortunate enough to have with Anil Dash (namedroppin' like whoa!) about what makes a PR person a good PR person, and he said the best thing you can do in PR is to be genuine, and real, and treat people with respect:

anyway, there are a few key things about being good at PR
and not "fake good" like most of the names you hear
you have to have a fundamental understanding of narrative, and of what drives people
what motivates them, generally, but also specifically what topics a particular reporter likes or what things an editor wants to see covered
and what their constraints are for time/attention/etc.
then also, you have to be willing to be subordinate to the story
this is the thing that every male PR person i've ever met fucks up. they want to see their name in lights

Anil's dfinitely a trust agent for me, so the fact that you and he agree here is important!

Re: A practical boarding pass redesign

Nice practical "design tennis" return to a brilliant serve! People don't care what hosting options you're using for your videos. They're agnostic whether they're watching a video at YouTube, or Vimeo, or TokBox. Obviously for the content producer YouTube is ideal, but emphasizing being on YouTube as being an important aspect of having your content accessible is folly.

Also, the only reason Hulu is going to fall by the wayside is that NBC itself is killing the damn thing by creating competing services. I don't get it.

Finally, I'll be very surprised to see YouTube host a premium television stream. I will be even more stupendously surprised if it streams in 1080p. My head will explode if they charge for it as a premium service.

Re: Blogs and social media behave like compound... - Matt DeBoard

I don't know if there's a reason per se, but in simple terms all he's saying is that the benefits of social media build upon themselves. It is as anglocentric as Europeans thinking that all of the U.S. is Manhattan, Los Angeles or San Francisco.
