Not to nitpick, but I think it is important to point out that *hundreds* of thousands live downtown. It's not just a quirky neighborhood that Holyday and the mayor don't understand—it's a significant chunk of the city!

Does anyone know if the TTC is ever going to tweak the non-station announcements in the new subway cars?

For example, the confusing "Next station is Interchange Station. St George. St George Station."

I would wager it's drugs and the border that are the problem.

England doesn't share a border with a nation full of guns, which helps. But then, Canada does, and our gun violence problems are nothing like Mexico's problems, despite tight restrictions on firearms.

So drugs, then. A huge quantity of drugs moves north through Mexico, and it's a very lucrative business, which contributes to the clustering of violence in Mexican cities near the border. If somebody put me in charge of fixing this, the first policy I would try is reducing the demand (and price) for drugs in the US.

Not that taking guns out of circulation is a totally useless thing to do, but it would take years to make a difference in the US, and the efforts in Mexico are clearly swamped by the black market and imports. In practical terms, like making a difference this year, I'm not sure tightening or loosening restrictions on firearms in Mexico (or even the US) would make much difference. It seems like something only countries with a small black market in guns have the luxury of tinkering with.

I found the threat of semi-public failure with the 52-books challenge helped me read more last year. I'm still on track to to fail by a wide margin, but if you think about it more than one book every two weeks isn't so bad either.

I am going to invent a bed that is also a shower because in the morning I always want to lie down in the shower and fall asleep but I am afraid of drowning and it is actually a little bit uncomfortable when I try. If my bed is a shower, that's intrinsically awesome and satisfies two 'great morning ideas', and I would also get to sleep in a little bit later because I will have been showering all night!

I'm not a professional consumer of literature/media/art so I can't seriously push back on any point except to say that I holistically enjoyed the book.

Where next would you direct someone who had wandered (erroneously?) into Hemingway? I can't promise I'll get to it soon but I *am* keeping a list of people's recommendations.

Quantity of stuff will never be an issue with the internet. The best thing
about twitter, I have found, is that you can let other people curate what
you read. It's sort of like Arts & Letters or The Morning News, but
personalized.

For a long time I said I would never need or want an iphone ("So you can
play games? Big deal.") and I still don't really want it as a phone, but I
am tired of lugging around an ipod AND a cellphone (that I mostly use as a
watch that texts). It would, essentially, be a very expensive way to
organize my pockets. But I want it.
