The steering wheel is on the right, and it runs on biodiesel w/o modification.
- Most mornings I join morning exercise at The Island School, at 6:30 in the morning. I ran a half marathon at the end of last semester, and am looking to shave 15 minutes off my time this semester.
- I usually commute to work via bike (5 miles each way), and I'm now obsessed with cycling. I did a 50 mile ride a few weeks ago, and am thinking about "upgrading" to a fixie.
- A pregnant cat now lives at the compound, and we've named her Meatface

Re: Time Waster - Bi-decade update

Good to hear from you, Nigel!

Re: Time Waster - Bi-decade update

Good questions. We can actually get a good start on things in the next year. The biggest hurdle is energy, and a megawatt scale solar plant could get us closer (maybe 10% penetration on a sunny day). The study is key to figuring out how to move forward in a profitable manner -- it doesn't make sense to do this at the expense of lots of jobs and security.

Re: Fuel consumption, 1 million gallons per year is a drop in the bucket -- maybe 1.5%. Even so, that's 1.5% less oil being imported, and that much less air pollution.

A fixie is what all the cool guys in Portland call a fixed gear bike. It's what people used before freewheels and gears...

Re: testing disqus

It works! Would love to see what sites like digg/reddit/etc. think of this sort of aggregation. If I see this thread on reddit and leave a comment there, knowing that it will be part of the collective conversation will be great.

But what if I can't stand the people that frequent Digg and don't want to deal with the noise of their comments? It seems like the moderation would take care of those, but who is the ultimate moderator in that situation? Will this be more effective as an opt-in or opt-out model?

Re: Time Waster

Good idea. I think the reality is that they'll fall in line with
expectations. I.e., a bus will do better than a prius which will do
better than an SUV.

As for Amtrak - the US has a very flawed view of the importance of
rail. Warren Buffet evidently invests a lot in trains, which should
say something about their future potential. A trip to Europe
demonstrates what a train system should be like, but I think it will
take some big economic confluences to get to that point.

Re: convenience vs. economy -- we should look for opportunities that
satisfy both. Imagine if everyone biked because it was more
convenient than driving a car! I agree that this is a big sticking point, and can also understand the choices leading to this decision.

Re: Time Waster

Yeah, serious.
