How about Linux VM's as part of the IaaS offerings in Azure?

Re: British Kid Spends Over $2,500 In Five Minute iPad App Spending Spree

Every in app purchase should require some sort of captcha or pass code to prevent kids from doing this. In addition there should be a daily limit set by the app store towards any sort of purchase. Once that is triggered, the account holder needs to log in to increase the limit or verify the purchase.
I am not surprised this happened to this family. Most kids are on an iPad these days - learning, interacting or playing games. This is just the reality of the generation the kinds are growing up in.

Re: Yahoo work-from-home policy sparks debate

Work from home is a policy driven decision. She is the leader of the Company and is making the call that employees need to show up for work in the office and not telecommute. As far as the employees go, its a personal choice whether they want to work there anymore or not. She played her hand. Now only time will tell whether her decision was right or wrong. In my opinion, you strive to build a team with A listers. A players will get the job done. There are enough tools today to collaborate virtually. With a Skype call/IM you can communicate with anyone regardless of location. Some of the great open source projects have come about with everyone being remote. So we know it's not that working from home is not productive. She just thinks its better for Yahoo now to get everyone together to invigorate the company.

Re: Broken by Design: MongoDB Fault Tolerance

Great article. Developers who choose Mongo should be mindful that they should expect data loss using Mongo. If critical data is being written to MongoDB, think again.

For the author. You should know by now that what sells the most is not necessarily the best. This applies to every industry (including software engineering). How many solutions have enterprises bought into only to realize that they either do not work or are fundamentally flawed. Perception is reality and it's hard to rationalize why something is they way it is.
Heck, a wide variety of people remember events that never occurred or something they saw on TV that never actually happened.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wik...

We have all lived through the MS Windows days when we lost data due to the infamous blue screen of death or a virus. Did that stop those same users from ever using the system again, we all know the answer to that. They started to shift behavior over time and sometimes that's just what it takes.

Keep the investigative engineeralism going.

Re: Broken by Design: MongoDB Fault Tolerance

What a lame argument for MongoDB. What Emin is pointing out is the big Gotcha with using Mongo. If you ask the average developer that uses MongoDB why they chose it, they will probably say speed. But when you ask them whether they knew that data loss is pretty much guaranteed with MongoDB, they will be caught by surprise. Having said that it is important to understand the consequence of a design choice and make that consciously. Having said that, MongoDB has a wide variety of applicability and I would use it for caching data.

Re: Webapp Runner – Apache Tomcat as a Dependency

This works great.
