Register the domain name before announcing the title.

Re: Revitalizing the American Dream

Don't know where you get your numbers, endorendil, but they are wrong. According to Dr. Don Walls, who is the leading authority on the subject: "Over the period 1993-2007, nearly 22% of all jobs were in firms with over 10,000 employees, and they created nearly 26% of the jobs created over that period. However, in adapting to technological change and global competition, they also destroyed 35% of all jobs. The net effect was that our largest companies contracted by nearly 6.5 million jobs over the period. A similar pattern played out for firms in the 2,500-9,999 range: they created 14.5 million new jobs over the period but destroyed 15.3 million jobs--thus also shedding nearly 800,000 jobs from their respective companies. At the other extreme, firms with less than 21 employees, while they created more jobs than they destroyed, all created and destroyed jobs at a lower rate than their share of total jobs in the economy. It was the mid-size firms that (1) created jobs at a faster rate and (2) destroyed jobs at a slower rate than their share of total jobs that contributed most to the success of the U.S. economy. In particular, firms with 100-499 employees [note: small businesses by SBA definition] created 15.3 million new jobs while only destroying 11.7--thus adding 3.7 million net new jobs over the period (39% of the total)." Those mid-size companies were startups in the late 1970s and 1980s. The question is, where are the jobs going to come from in the next two decades. As for the innovation issue, why don't you ask the big companies that have scaled way back on their own R&D and instead turned to buying successful startups that have already proven the innovation and done it on far less capital. Do all startups innovate in that sense? Of course not. But that in no way diminishes the critical role that the entrepreneurial sector plays in both innovation and job generation. Facts, as Ronald Reagan observed, are stubborn things.

Re: Never Work for Chump Change

By the way, we welcome comments on what you think of this change in the column...

Cheers, Norm and Bo

Re: Lessons From a Blue-Collar Millionaire

That's good to hear. There are, in fact, specific rules to Safe Space that anyone can follow. I'd contact Nick, Chris, or Rudy.
