The problem is probably that it took place during the late evening hours in Australia. Most media don't report at all, or only little, overnight. And tsunami warnings are very serious - they are rarely issued. When they are issued, it means there is a realistic threat of a destructive tsunami. If you can read also in the post above, some coastal areas were evacuated because of the warning.

The tsunami warning centers only issue tsunami warnings when there is a realistic risk a destructive tsunami may strike. The fact that the earthquake struck off a fairly unpopulated region of New Zealand does not matter (it does for the New Zealand warning) but destructive tsunamis can travel many hundreds of thousands of miles far. Populated areas in Australia would have a significant risk if a destructive tsunami had been generated.

Whenever we use other sources we always cite them as being the source. We fully covered this story without the use of other media.

The news organizations are indeed facing cutbacks in newsrooms but yet, we as a small group, are able to beat them on breaking news stories. And not through aggregation, we do enough of our own news reporting.

Yes, you are right apparently. I don't understand why, I just got off the phone with Paypal and everything is set to english as it should be. Seems to be a problem with ChipIn and the ChipIn website doesn't show a solution either. Still working on it, but for now, people can go to www.bnonews.com and click on the banner where they are redirected to the english page as it should be.

By the way, thank you for your donation! I just received it, it's very much appreciated.

Hi, thank you (nertzy and PP) for your comments. I wanted to personally respond to you both (I wrote the blog post).

First, PP, I understand what you mean. BNO News is about breaking news and we do aim to bring the news and its details as soon as possible, that is: if we have a source we consider credible enough, from there we gather more information ourselves and monitor reporting from other news services to see what their sources tell them. So we can provide both our own newsgathering as well as letting people know what the rest is saying about it.

Nertzy: We first called emergency services because our initial source was not considered credible enough to run it on our news service, we wanted to get some official confirmation first. When we confirmed the accident, we ran it. We didn't post it on Twitter when we received the initial word from our source.
