Either he is having really terrible luck or he is having a problem with some type of addiction like drugs or gambling. I'm sure this is what you already suspect. If the latter is the case I hope he and his family survives to get help for his demons. One important indicator to help answer this question may be is if your family has a history of alcoholism. It's not foolproof or absolute but generally if yes then there's a good chance it can repeat itself in other addiction related ways. Anyway, my best wishes to your family. I'm a big fan.
