It's a subtle distinction, but it does have one big consequence: it means that a function that invokes something that does work async cannot return the value being sought. For that you would need something like coroutines built into the language.

For the Async example to work, we'd have to change console.log to do it's work async.

Re: giant Cypress: Japanese woodworking tool punk • Skinny saws?

Semi-related, Mark @ BadAxe recently took a poll on discontinuing the .015" plate dovetail saw (see https://www.facebook.com/Ba... ).

Have you ever seen this kind of warping from heat when using a Japanese saw? How thick are their plates generally? Maybe this is more of a factor from the plate being held by a rigid back? But then, some Japanese saws are backed as well, so...

Curious.

Re: giant Cypress: Japanese woodworking tool punk • They say that planing end grain is one of the...

Softwood.

Re: A grit too far

And to be double clear, I own and use a 13K grit sigma power stone (and a strop). And I like it. Various services that either integrate with or replace Reader have suggested that the active user base is at least a couple million (http://allthingsd.com/20130... people.

One big issue, and an issue I have with The Old Reader, is that Google had no way to make money on the thing. Ads don't really work on feed readers.

Once upon a time, I was the UI lead for Bloglines, another web-based feed reader with a fairly large set of users. We too ran headlong into the free problem; we were losing money hand over foot and the powers that be didn't want to move to a model where we actually charged users for using the product.

As for the relative immaturity of the rest of the software market, I think that speaks as much to just how good Google Reader was. Having been there, it's very very difficult to compete with a very well done, free product.

That said, give the other products a bit of time. I know they're all reeling from the sudden influx of a large number of users, fleeing Google Reader. Scaling the software needed to run a feed reader is surprisingly difficult and most of these shops are fairly small operations. If you have problems, please take the time to send them an email and describe what you're seeing. I think you'll find them surprisingly receptive. They're not the stone front that Google was.

Ben Lowery, IOE, '99

Re: giant Cypress: Japanese woodworking tool punk • “Nature forging a baby.” Guillaume de Lorris and...

All those poor discarded baby prototypes sitting in the corner...

No one puts Baby in a corner!

Re: giant Cypress: Japanese woodworking tool punk • This video shows a Japanese woodworker fitting a...

Pushing the blade back over the work, tsk tsk.
