When I was growing up my dad was frugal to the point of stinginess in his pursuit of FI. It wasn’t fun for me and my siblings and I think my relationship with my dad suffered because of it.

I think the main takeaway for me is that PF should serve us and not dictate how we live our lives. Thanks for sharing your perspective.

WordPress depends on a variable, $_SERVER["HTTPS"] to check if it is on SSL. As a consequence, when this variable is not set, and SSL is forced, WordPress tries to redirect back to http. This causes redirect loops on the back-end only, and not on the front-end.

You can solve this by adding the following code to the wp-config.php file, above the require_once call:

if (isset($_SERVER['HTTP_X_FORWARDED_PROTO']) && $_SERVER['HTTP_X_FORWARDED_PROTO'] == 'https')
$_SERVER['HTTPS'] = 'on';

This is a regulatory issue. They took a long time to make it happen with the FDA, now Apple has to do the same with all the health ministries in every country they want to roll out the feature to 🤦🏻‍♂️

Great episode. I recently learnt that a former contractor of mine started up a similar business to mine. I was initially cheesed off and concerned that he stole my processes and proprietary info. But after stewing on it for a day, I realized that he's not after the same customers and his new business doesn't affect mine. And even if it did, I don't care :)

Hi Jeff, thanks so much for this series. I think I understand the placements feature, but am wondering how to do category level targeting for the same positions. Here's what I mean...

In your example you have a run-of-site placement called ProTools.io Top Sidebar that includes the protools_sidebar_top_square_250x250 ad unit. How would I create a placement for this position only for the hosting category? In other words, I want to create a placement called ProTools.io Top Sidebar - Hosting; targeting the protools_sidebar_top_square_250x250 ad only on the Hosting category.

If I understand correctly, I would need to create multiple ad placements and units for each category e.g.

Placement: ProTools.io Top Sidebar - Hosting; includes Ad Unit: protools_hosting_sidebar_top_square_250x250
Placement: ProTools.io Top Sidebar - Analytics; includes Ad Unit: protools_analytics_sidebar_top_square_250x250
Placement: ProTools.io Top Sidebar - Collaboration; includes Ad Unit: protools_collaboration_sidebar_top_square_250x250
... and so on

Then I would need a way to display the correct code snippet (Ad tag) for each category right?

When you load Disqus, it loads at the current width, e.g. iPad landscape. Then when I rotated my iPad to portrait the Disqus comments stayed the same width

Hey Brian I actually like Disqus too. As a commenter, I personally feel more engaged when commenting with Disqus because of the notifications, threading and user profiles. However I don't use it on my own site because I'm not crazy about its Sponsored Comments feature. Have you seen any of those? Also, your workaround for the additional load time makes it not responsive

Hi Winnie, I'm not a regular reader but we know each other la right?

I hear you and I know where you are coming from and so let me offer some unsolicited advice. Ask yourself honestly where you see yourself in 5 years time. Does the blog fit in the picture? No, then ditch it. Yes, then grow it.

Blogging was fun and cool in the beginning when it was an indie thing. But now there is mainstream and it is so competitive. And being a 1-person publication competing against big names like Engadget and The Verge or even other 1-person publications like Daring Fireball is a huge undertaking. Especially more so when you are not doing it full time.

So unless you are really ready to put in that level of effort into your blog then I think it's ok to let the blog just take a back seat in your life and have one less thing to worry about (option #2, and maybe #3). Life is too short to worry about not blogging frequently enough!

P.S. Where are the freebies? I don't mind winning a few since you have no response :P
