The thing is, though, this guy can now possibly be charged with multiple counts of assault (at the very least). I say "possibly" because I'm not familiar with TX law... but "self defense" likely wouldn't apply because he was not directly under attack. And given that he is an accomplished MMA fighter, he would be held to a higher standard of care than a typical person (meaning that his actions could be construed as "excessive force" even though he faced multiple attackers)..

I hope I'm completely wrong on this, and it would suck to see it happen. I'd just hate to see him have to pay for an act of (well-deserved) vigilante justice.

Re: Strategic Outsourcing: Five Freelancing Mistakes to Avoid

An excellent post. Over the years, I've found that following up (asking for repeat business and referrals) is essential for freelancing success. You spend less time and money marketing your services... plus, you don't have to deal with the frustration of proving yourself to a new client. Referral clients approach you with a positive attitude rather than skepticism, which makes the process of setting up and executing a project go more smoothly.

Thanks for the insightful post!

Lee

Re: What Raj Can Teach You About Business

Excellent post, Chris! (And the image of Raj was a nice touch.) We had a similar experience during our last trip to New Orleans - I think the driver earned $50 + $15 tip each way between the airport and hotel. A year later, I still have his business card.

Asking for the sale (and repeat business) is such a simple concept that most entrepreneurs miss it completely.... but it can keep you from having to continually scramble for business.

Re: 6 Ways to Manage Freelancing as a Work-at-Home Dad

You're very welcome, Craig. Not just one, but two or three (in different colors) for each shoe. Preferably paired with Reeboks - the ones with the curved red stripes on the sides. I thought they made me look like I could sink a basket from a half-mile away, even though I couldn't hit my rear with both hands.

- Miami Vice. I never did really figure out what the show was supposed to be about, but Crockett and Tubbs were icons of cool, so I watched the stupid show. I even had the white linen jacket and pants that I wore with loafers and no socks.

- Flashdance. The first R-rated movie I was ever allowed to see. And I only wanted to see it because there were boobs. Exposed ones. For a whole three seconds. Wheee.....Other than that, I don't remember much about the movie. It was about the Cold War, right? :-)

And, of course...

- The Cosby Show. No explanation necessary.

Thanks for the great post!

Lee

Re: How I Got to #1 on Google

Heh, too funny. I can only add that, after freelancing full-time for three years, you have to develop the ability to say "no." It's okay to turn a client down if you smell trouble (or if he wants to underpay you). It's also okay to say "no" when a client keeps adding tasks to a project without raising your fee. The sooner you learn how to use the word "no," the easier building your freelancing business will be.

Re: How to Embed YouTube Video Without Related Videos

Thanks for the great tip, Chris! He simply mentioned transcription. Now, if you're lucky enough to find a VA that transcribes and edits... sure, there's no comparison between that and VRS, I grant you.

Thank you for pointing out that there are other options. :-)

Re: 5 Tips to Avoid “Blogging Burnout” and Take Care of Business

Good information. One comment, though...

Is there an advantage to having a VA transcribe a blog post rather than using voice recognition software? Granted, I'm a bit biased, because I *have* to use VRS (nerve damage), but it seems more efficient to use Dragon to write directly to Word. The higher-end versions can even transcribe from recordings.

It's not perfect, of course (well, 99% perfect for me) but if you have to edit a VA's transcription anyway, it's really no more difficult to edit a Word doc produced via Dragon.

Just food for thought. Thanks for the great post, Chris!

Re: Becoming a Better Problogger By Becoming a Better You

A very timely post, David. I just happen to be having one of those mornings when I'd rather go back to bed than do anything productive. It's a good thing so many probloggers are interested in personal development issues - everybody needs a bit of a boost now and again.

I wrote a post a week or so ago called "When Blogging Takes Over Your Life" that provides some good tips for balancing things out... We see that there is so much potential for average people to not only survive, but prosper through internet marketing and blogging.

I think you're doing a great job of showing people that this is indeed possible.
