Apparently Rocky Bru and other UMNO bloggers are starting some kind of campaign in support of this derhaka hysteria. There's one sticker saying "Kami berdiri teguh bersama Tuanku dan menerima apa-apa keputusan yang Tuanku fikir adalah terbaik demi rakyat" ..Well let's see..Hypothetically, if the Sultan thinks it is in the country's best interest that you eat shit AND hang yourself, does that mean you should do it straight away without enganging your brain?

Agree with your point about Ali Baba companies. When I was an auditor I spoke with many honest Chinese businessmen who had to take this route because of nonsensical bumi requirements by the govt. E.g Only 100% bumi companies can apply for AP for importing foreign cars. So how? I am more angry with the "Ali" rather than "Baba" for not using the opportunities available to them.

But still..the last part is especially hilarious.. :D

You're rite 'bout Starbucks & 7-11 franchises. Berjaya also brought Wendy's a few months back. And KFC franchise here is owned by Kulim Bhd. Not sure about McD though..

Like you wrote, "Bukan tak boleh menentang, tapi guna la cara yang efektif". Kalau kita boikot pun dapat apa? Sure the companies might lose a few quid, then what? I don't and won't support Israel's actions for obvious reasons, but seriously, if they think this will work, then they need to go back to school.

On a related note, since Anwar said PR may join demo or boycott, what's going to happen to multimillion dollar new FDI in Penang? I'm sure some of them are Americans :P

Totally agree. I've been sending emails to the some PR politicians asking them to stop this nonsense. These dimwits forget MILLIONS of workers depend on the MNCs, directly or indirectly. Who's going to be responsible for the workers at Starbucks if they are retrenched as a result of this stupid boycott?

On the other hand, once UMNO comes out and boycott they have to follow suit, I suppose. They are politicians, after all.

TG Nik Aziz appeared on TV3 the other day saying we already have laws that give MANDATORY death sentence by hanging for drugs crime/homicide. But we have no problems with that coz it's colonial law. Why the double standard?

And why is that that whenever Muslims choose to believe in something, we are gullible, backward thinking, afraid to be called infidel etc etc. To idiots like Ti Lian Ker, feel free to defend whatever beliefs you hold but don't look down on people who believe otherwise.

Exactly. Maybe Dato' Ti is having illusion coz he keeps hanging around with UMNO/MCA-types. :P And both my parents are civil servants so I know for a fact corruption is alive and kicking in the state.

"Skull cap. jubah,seen to be pious, regulate the Masjid ,mixed with the right crowd etc" ~ is really the kind of stereotyping normally associated with master spinner Wong Chun Wai. Going by this logic, anybody wearing suit and tie is bound to commit white collar crime. So what if they want to socialise at the mosque? Surely that's way better than spending people's money at GRO clubs, isn't it?

Bottom line, in general, I trust the PAS people more than politicians from UMNO, PKR, DAP, MCA whatever else.

And for those who tell you how Kelantan is so backward, has no development etc etc, tell them to come to my hometown, Temerloh. It's less than 2 hours drive from KL but it seems so far away from civilisation. On a lighter note, we do have Secret Recipe there :-)

I'm from Pahang (born & bred) but now working in KL. Most of my close relatives (including my parents) and many of my old buddies still live and cari makan in Pahang. Thus I can say with reasonable authority that Dato' Ti Lian Ker is probably talking about different Pahang. I don't know much about Kelantan but if they are so clean and honest in Pahang as he said then I wonder how come a state that has palm oil, rubber, timber, port, wonderful beaches, National Park, natural resources of various kind is not one of the richest states in the country?

Capitalisme, socialism or whatever is just a label to me. In the end, people will form opinion based on their situation. Ever notice how most of people who defend free market are well-off? And people who defend socialism are relatively not so? When American companies are having trouble they go to the government for bailout, using taxpayers' money. Yet these are the same companies that advocate free market capitalism when they want to profit from sweatshops.

I feel a bit funny when people start calling you commie/leftist/socialist just because you are against some of the practices in capitalism. Everyone is responsible for themselves, eh? Then who is responsible for the current financial mess? Free market capitalism is a beautiful concept but a little regulation to manage it can't be that bad, can it?

Well, if you put it that way then may be it is not so clear. I guess some people will always try to justify their actions. But then again the fatwa would not be pleasant to some people at the top, would it?

As for mark-up and profit margin, I heard before that in Islam anything beyond 30% is not ethical (or is it 20%?). Again, I am not sure so need to check with my local ustaz :oops:

A fatwa is meant to clear confusion or provide solution to something that is vague. It is usually done after request from some quarters. From my observations, the fatwas are more often than not released following some new trends/ development in the society. A few years back, yoga is not that common amongst Malaysians, Muslims in particular. It is now a common practice especially in urban areas. My take is some people who have done it may find something quite similar to Hinduism in yoga and ask the Muftis/ustaz whether it is ok or not for Muslims to take part. I suppose it is THEIR(Muftis) job to do some research on the subject and announce the ruling. That's why they are there in the first place. If it is wrong, it is wrong lah. You can't expect them to say, " Erm..based on our studies, we find this is wrong but since many liberals will probably screw us, it is better for us to just keep quiet." For Muslims who really can't live without yoga, then up to you lah. Whatever makes you happy. But there are many people (like my wife) who are not clear on this and want some guidance from the Muftis. Non-Muslims of course is not affected in any way.

As for fatwa on corruption, as mentioned, corruption is NOT a vague area. CORRUPTION IS WRONG/BERDOSA etc. Why do you need a fatwa on something that is already known to be wrong. Do you need a fatwa on robbery? or murder? or cheating? The fatwa should not be an open and shut case, I agree, and public should always be welcomed to voice their opinions in a respectful way. However those people asking for fatwa on corruption simply have no idea how these things work and shout just for the sake of shouting. My advice to these people is if you don't understand the issue at hand, do a bit of research before commenting. If you want to be taken seriously, that is.

i dunno whether it is politically correct thing to say but justmy2SEN certainly makes a few valid points. i think Jed also has written on this before. Racism cuts both ways. Look at just concluded MCA election. Did any of the candidates promise or offer solutions to improve the well being of poor non-Chinese, some of which have voted them blindly for God knows how many elections? All we heard was NEP bad la, Chinese want this la. DAP also celebrated like mad when ONE Malay joined them (Tunku Aziz). And that lone Malay dude in Gerakan even lost the VP race. Even the "fundamentalist" and "fanatics" like PAS have hundreds or more Chinese and Indians joining the Kelab Penyokong PAS. Yet these parties have the nerve to call themselves multi-racial.

Constitution is just that, constitution. If a person is racist, no amount of regulation will change that. Example, take the NEP (technically it is a policy, not a law). It started as a good policy to lift the poor. It was even successful to certain extent. Then PEOPLE start abusing it to suit their own agenda. It is the PEOPLE, not the law. If somebody amends the constitution tomorrow, do you think the government will suddenly start employing more non-Malays as civil servants? :-) Do you think big Chinese companies will immediately start hiring bumi as their accountants? :o

yes Jed you are right. The policy doesn't differentiate b'ween races. It is supposed to level the playing field so that the poor can get a leg up. Since most of the poor are bumis/Malays, naturally this segment benefits the most. The best solution I think is for the opposition to use their newly found strength to increase the pressure on the sitting government to monitor and improve its implementation and make sure it benefits its target segment rather than some sneaky Datuk who can't spell his own name. Oh, and the enforcement of the law (Police, ACA whatever) so that people realise they can and will be punished if they try to be clever and manipulate the system (Ali Baba, corruption, etc). Rather than barking about the dog food, losers that need crutches, 16 Sept or trying to be like S'pore. There are some stuff in the NEP that does not make economic sense (that 30% equity thingy, for eg) which should rightly be scrapped, but that's no reason to scrap the whole policy and adopt a dog-eat-dog economic policy. Well, it might suit some people, eh Jed? :-)

RPK is typical of the "I'm-doing-fine-so-those-other-losers-can-fuck-off" elite (Malays or otherwise). Now I'm not big fan of NEP coz I've seen how it was twisted to benefit a lucky connected few (like Messiah Anwar among others). But surely you have got to have some kind of policy to help the poor of the country (Malays or otherwise). To say "only losers need crutches" is not only showing the ignorance of our brave "hero" RPK of the reality on the ground but also unfortunately sums up the thinking of these crowd. Look, my (future) children may not need crutches because I can provide a reasonably good life (no doubt with the help of crutches given to me years ago) but there are thousands/millions who don't make it not because they are stupid or have no talent, but because their parents are fishermen or lowly educated single mothers. So are they "losers" because they need crutches to at least dream of eating the same meals we eat? The celebrity "fighters" like RPK & Theresa Kok can complain about dog food and all but for some people living on rice and eggs is heavenly already. Maybe RPK can ask the parents of a boy in Sabah who killed himself because the family is too poor. Losers, aren't they?
