There were several problems with de-institutionalization.

Republican politicians were just as eager to shut down the institutions as the left, but for different reasons--financial. Reducing budgets without making anyone cry.

The public was told that what was going to happen was that the institutions would be closed, and that people in these institutions would be handed off to "community care facilities" where these magic new drugs--SSRIs--would enable them to live "normal" lives.

What really happened was that the in-patient institutions were defunded, and the patients turfed out onto the streets. The politicians failed to fund, or failed to adequately fund the community care centers.

This has been far more expensive than maintaining the psychiatric institutions because instead of treating the mental illness when it develops, we wait until the person commits a serious criminal act, they get arrested ($), jailed ($$), run through a trial ($-$$), and then sent to prison($$$). This is on top of whatever costs that the crime put on the victim.

Then when they get to prison they still might not be treated for their crime, so they wind up crazy AND in prison, either for life, or when they get out they still have untreated mental health issues.

I can see where--with some planning--sitting alone in a comfy chair listening to music or (carefully curated) podcasts and avoiding dense traffic (the planning part) can help avoid PTSD episodes.

But Platner claims his disability is shoulders and knees.

Look, Platner is a horrible person. The kind of person who should be shunned by society, and when he acts out in public mocked relentlessly.

But here's the thing, that doesn't entitle OTHER people to be f*king stupid when calling him out.

5001 from ouyster farming, and 3000 from "harbor master" is 8001. Last time I was in an arithmetic class 4800 (from disability) was in fact less than 8001, and in no uncertain terms does not dwarf it.

How is it that someone who is a disabled vet is able to be an oyster farmer?

Reputation.

20 or so years ago VW/Audi, BMW, Volvo and Mercedes made incredibly reliable cars.

But they kept trying to keep ahead of the Japanese manufacturers, which meant investing in ever more sophisticated and complicated technology. This created cars that spec'd out brilliant, but are brittle.

Unfortunately, for ego reasons (I think) the Japanese are following them.

Nah. Biden was awful. Really awful.

Platner is the same level of awful, +/-. Not going to quibble about the low order bits.

They're just on different vectors. Biden was a full on corrupt swamp creature. But he was in part shaped by behavior that Republicans not only allowed, but also routinely engaged in.

There's a lot of rumors around what happened with that SEAL team in Afghanistan.

I suspect that Lone Survivor wasn't a 100 percent accurate portrayal of what happened.

But I won't say that Luttrell lied about what happened. Sometimes telling the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth is not the way to get the story that needs to be told told.

Expecially when your chain of command almost all the way up has to sign off on it. You leave some details out. You chance some "facts". You don't embarass the dead.

My FIL was type II diabetic, and took the position that he could more or less eat anything he wanted as long as he shot up insulin afterwards.

5+ years on dialysis, neuropathy, lost one or two toes, etc.

The thing about confession (ex-catholic here) is that you don't get absolution in the eyes of god unless you really are sorry for it. If he was confessing to the same priest every time, that priest should have read him the riot act.

If she was born in 1940, and registered to vote in 1958, she registered using an all paper system.

When they switched from paper to electronic someone keyed in all of that data.

There is a margin of error in EVERY process, so some birth years got entered wrong. And since it was "only" voter rolls--where no one cares how old you are as long as it's over 18--no one bothered to check.

The simple answer to this is to archive the voter rolls after every federal election (meaning every 2 years), and send out a notice to everyone that before they can vote again, they need to re-register.
