Interesting that Dobson has never said anything about the Obamas' faith - or Hillary's - or even Jimmy Carter's, which has been demonstrated in his actions numerous times. I smell partisanship confused with faith. Which is one reason I stopped listening to or reading anything Dobson many years ago (Some comments he made regarding domestic violence aided that process). He's no longer preaching Christianity - he's only preaching Republicanism.

I learned a few tricks I regularly incorporate on photos of me - however my profile pic was a selfie I took in natural light and I did very little to it.

Also when you raise teenagers you get really good at removing zits from prom pix and whitening teeth. :-)

Well said, as always, Tom. However, you've gone and poked the bear. Big pet peeve.

It's not just celebrities - I've seen wealthy people in lay leadership positions in churches when I know darned well that's the only reason. Lifestyles that are preached against from the pulpit are accepted when there are dollars attached. Being wealthy doesn't make us more spiritual.

Many years ago, the church Jim and I attended conducted a capital campaign. The committee that led the campaign was 100% composed of wealthy white men who wore suits and ties.

One of the promotional campaigns was an obviously expensive package that was mailed to all church members. At the time, we were newly married and on a very tight budget. It was borderline offensive that our church spent this kind of money to try to get us to give on what little we had. It's a great example of the lack of perspective; to these suited white men, the money was nothing. I don't think anyone considered what it would look or feel like to non-wealthy members. At least I hope they didn't.

Jenny McCarthy needs to shut up about vaccines, Jessica Alba apparently doesn't need to be making sunscreen, and Gwyneth Paltrow would be well advised to stop talking about food stamps.

I think it's fine when celebrities truly want to use their platform for good, but we should never confer authority on them simply because of their fame.

Yes, yes, and yes. I've always valued the Creed. When my kids were little, once in a while we'd say the Creed instead of our pre-dinner blessing. To me it's more than just rote recitation; it's our proclamation of what — and in Whom — we believe. Agree with you 100 percent.

Yup. One of my hot buttons. I used to dress up in pricy suits, silk blouses, pantyhose and pumps for work. Then on Sunday I wore that stuff to church. Then I decided to stay home full time.

After a couple of years, the suits and nice leather pumps wore out, and, since I didn't wear that stuff on a regular basis anymore, I didn't buy any new dressy clothes. My husband and I felt that my "best" was to sacrifice expensive one-a-week outfits for things our family needed more, so I began to dress down.

Now I dress up even less for work, and the older I get the more I realize that, for church to be accessible to all is more important than my fashion sense, or anyone else's sense of what's appropriate to wear to church. Rather than be distracted about what we're wearing, my husband and I have made a conscious desire to wear jeans. Partly so others will feel comfortable, but also partly because we like jeans and that's how we're most comfortable.

Honestly, I think if Jesus strolled into our Sunday service, He'd be wearing jeans, comfortable sandals, and a St. Louis Cardinals t-shirt. Because we all know Jesus is a Cardinals fan, right? :-) #sorrycouldntresist

Hilarious. When Sara Ann was in junior high, she had sleepovers nearly every weekend here at our house. It was considered a good sleepover if at least one of the girls peed their pants. So there is a precedent.

So spot on. Completely agree with you. In my family of origin, we don't do open caskets, so no one has to stand next to it. We've adopted the practice of a semi-private burial first, then a memorial service after.

I hate that we have to dress up in our Sunday best, which usually includes uncomfortable shoes, to do this.

I have a Google doc with strict instructions following my leave taking. Namely, dress code=jeans (which will no doubt piss off some folk in my family), cremate me and spread my ashes over Greers Ferry Lake, then have a party, for which I will have the playlist prepared.

And why do we have to write thank you notes? For weddings, ok, but it's a huge burden to put on a grieving family. When my dad passed, it took us weeks, even with the help of friends, to finish the thank you notes.

I could go on, but I'll spare you my funeral rant. Thanks for saying it!

Awesome. I tried to teach myself guitar and gave myself tendonitis in the process. Got obsessed and couldn't put it down. But I totally relate to this post.
