In fact, most people said this group would have a 2-3 year window ... this is the 4th year already. The accomplished a ton and brought pride back to the franchise ... but its over. And they may have to stink for 2-3 years like the Bulls and Heat did. But rebuilding is a must. They lost three games in this series because the legs were too old to get it done in the last 2-3 minutes of the game. You cant fight time.

Re: celtics - For Celtics, the one that got away - WEEI | Paul Flannery

There are two plays Garnett mesed up late in the game. Before the debacle on the pick play with Ray Allen at the end of regulation, Garnett also messed up a pick and roll with Pierce ... pierce wound up scoring on the play but Garnett looked like he was going to foul pierce or run him over as they went to the basket side by side ... KG's head was not in the game at all.

Re: Crawford, Sox walkoff again

Great to see Crawford getting in a groove but could our "pitching coach" ummmmm, i dont know maybe COACH and deal with Aceves and his ever-growing balk problem?

Re: Ref: Pierce 'directed profanity towards Wade'

miami played a great game and they were hustling all game long .... they were also playing defense very aggressively .... and if the refs allow that type of aggression and dont call fouls when rondo and pierce drive the lane, the Heat will sweep.

Re: BC's Herzlich undrafted, but still offers thanks

Right ... as soon as the labor situation is squared and free agents can be signed ... he will be scooped up quickly. The Patriots arent going to draft anyone who might have a steroid issue that might embarrass Bob and Myra Kraft..... the Krafts have always wanted squeaky clean citizens. Of course, we all know squeaky clean citizens dont win titles.
Second, it comes down to two players --- Tom Brady and Randy Moss .... Bellichick will only draft players like Brady ...guys who are hungry, looking to prove something, overachievers .... he will NOT EVER draft super-talented college guys that are cocky and head-cases like Moss was when he came out of college. Remember, when the Pats DID sign Moss, he was hungry, looking to prove himself and get one more contract.
The exceptions, guys like Seymour and Mayo, are guys Beliichick totally vetted and decided had good heads on their shoulders ... few and far between among rookies .... in short, Bellichick doesnt want to babysit immature rookies, which, in my mind, mind, means he will never draft the kind of super-stud playmarker this team needs to get back to title status.

Re: Solder of fortune: Pats take Colorado tackle

It's a draft day miracle!!!! pleeease bill pleeease if you love your fans at all ... please take Da'quan Bowers with pick 33 .....pleeeeeaase!!!!

Re: Downtown holiday boost

Marty5,
The tree was taken down after deadline for our most recent edition. Had the parent wished to, the child could have been treated in the emergency room. The parent wished to provide the treatment herself.
The hiospital is not the appropriate place to go if you wish to provide treatment yourself. The appropriate course of action would have been to call the Fire Department. The local fire departments provided power to scores of patients who lost power during the December ice storm. It would have been very easy for them to either bring over a small generator or allow the family to use their facilities.
The parent, in this situation, admits that it was not an emergency situation.
We applaud the pharmacy for being community minded and allowing the use of their outlet. However, we believe their were circumstances that resulted in the hospital making the decision it did. There are no "bad guys" here.

Re: Derry pharmacy provides electric outlet for parent in need

In fairness to Parkland Hospital, there are liability issues involved with allowing non-employees to use medical equipment in the hospital. We would encourage anyone in this type of situation to contact their local fire department, as they are equipped and trained to handle power outages for families with medical equipment in their homes.

Re: Red Stars to shine in China

We're having a bit of a technical issue with this slide show. Your passion is welcomed.
I can only ask you once again to read the earlier posts.
I have no personal position on gun ownership. I would, however, like to prevent as many senseless deaths as possible and I believe that most gun owners feel the same way. That is common ground. Folks should be working together on this issue. As for editorial policy, we encourage ALL views on issues and do not refuse to publish op-ed pieces or letters because we don't agree with the viewpoint or because we think most of our readers may disagree. Every day, when I enter my office, I have to check my personal political views at the door. The only time my opinions come out is when I write a column or a editorial. Healthy, respectful debate is the cornerstone of this nation and of journalism. We will soon be running a pro-gun op-ed piece by one of the posters here, who has volunteered to submit a counter argument. We look forward to receiving that article and the continued debate.

Re: Confirmed case of H1N1 flu at Matthew Thornton

Thanks for the info Pete. We don't have a Twitter feed (yet) but we have a page on Facebook that we use for quick updates and breaking news alerts.

Re: A common sense approach to gun control

Jim,
I'll repeat something I said earlier. No newspaper worth its salt will limit op-ed pieces and letters to the editor to those opinions it agrees with. The Derry News opinion page is chock full of the full spectrum of opinions. I print letters and op-ed pieces from Republicans and Democrats and Libertarians; from Conservatives, liberals and anarchists. You say Miss McKinney wrote hate speech -- I challenge you to point out any such passages. And no, I don't accept the assertion that advocating tighter gun control laws equals hatred for gun owners. Moreover, I invite any gun owner from New Hampshire, preferable southern New Hampshire, to submit an op-ed piece challenging Miss McKinney's points. I will print it, gladly.
Again, the views expressed in letters to the editor and op-ed pieces DO NOT represent the views of the newspaper or myself. The official position of the newspaper and my opinions can be found in the editorials on the left side of the page.
As for the issue of gun control, I will say again that I'd like to see the NRA and other gun rights groups take an aggressive position against irresponsible gun use. That is, come out publically and call for tough prosecution of children who bring guns to school and a parent who allowed them easy access. To this point, when such cases happen, gun owners are silent.
Advocacy does not mean just railing against your opponents. It means cleaning your own house and lobbying for tougher sentences for gun crimes, including illegal posssession and domestic violence shootings. I want to see gun owners police their own.
And no, Jim, I don't want to take your guns. But I also want to make sure accidental shootings and assaults by the owners of legal gun owners are reduced as far as possible. I believe this is a position you share.
One final note. Jim, you seem to be against a free exchange of ideas and threaten to boycott a publication that allows opinions different from yours. That flies in the face of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution.

Re: A common sense approach to gun control

Beansie,
The concern over insults was in regard to previous comments, not yours.
And again, I'm not offering support for any proposed new rules .... I'm asking gun owners to present solutions to the number of gun related deaths caused by "non-criminals", that is, people without previous records, who are using legal guns. Or is the argument that a handful of deaths is a small price to pay for freedom?

Re: A common sense approach to gun control

Beansie,
An exchange of ideas is terrific. Critique is terrific.
However, our society has degenerated to the point where "politics" and "debate" are nothing more than name calling and mudslinging.
The same forefathers that crafted the Constitution debated with decorum and dignity and respect.
Educated men and women can debate passionately without insulting one another.
Americans should set a tone with civilized discourse.
As to a couple of points you made .... Sometimes the laws are not enforced. The Londonderry PD allowed a gun-toting junior high student to walk away with no legal punishment after bringing a gun and ammunition to school. Neither were charges filed against the parents. This was wrong and I would hope responsible gun owners would be outraged. It sends the wrong message.
And second, there ARE times when an available, legal gun can turn a law-abiding citizen into a criminal. Such as in the case of a domestic dispute that gets totally out of hand or involves booze. Another example is that of a Londonderry firefighter who killed his wife in a driveway shootout. Both had legal guns.
I'm open to suggestions on how we reduce these incidents. You are right, criminals are going to get guns one way or another. I'm more worried about the tragedies involving average, law-abiding citizens. Again, the floor is open to reasonable suggestions.

Re: A common sense approach to gun control

Cekim,
I will have to respectfully disagree with you here and would recommend that you brush up on your Constitutional law. This country was founded with many "freedoms" and "rights" that were later curtailed because either they were abused or it was determined by the "majority" that they were wrong.
These wrongs were righted by further amendments to the Constitution. Women's suffrage for starters, the abolition of slavery and later equal protection for all races. The Constitution remains a living, breathing and evolving document. Personally, I don't believe the Second amendment should be abolished. However, it would be great to see gun owners step up and hold each other accountable for not storing them properly (as in the case of the Londonderry Middle-schooler who brought a gun and ammunition to school earlier this year) or who act irresponsibly with a firearm, as in certain domestic violence situations. Most gun owners are exceptionally responsible. Those are the people who should push for tougher penalties for those irresponsible people who use legal guns in the wrong way. That is common ground and common sense.
