Don't sociological profiles need to be placed into a context? Because the fact is, rape has a very different historical/political/geographical/whatever context than like, someone losing a job over comments, and I'm really shocked that you would ignore that context in the first place.

And congrats to Esquire for being ahead of the story and for caring about it in the first place, but you're being an [unconscious] participant in rape culture by denying context.

Re: http://bthny.tumblr.com/post/3292348351

Hey - I probably spoke a little rashly there, and I can see the rationale for Fetterman wanting to retain control over the Levi's money. I have to admit that I don't know too much about the history of corruption in that area. I was a little bit surprised by the tone the author took towards Fetterman, especially after everything else I've seen about him and Braddock has been really positive, but I do think that there is something to be said about the "remaking" of Braddock and how it hasn't necessarily done anything for the working-class people who were there before Fetterman.

I think that Fetterman has good intentions and has done good things for Braddock, but I don't think the negative consequences of some of his policies should be ignored.

Re: http://bthny.tumblr.com/post/3165517746

yep, I moved to Philadelphia in 2007 to intern there for a few months after graduating from college. I worked on the full power campaign, getting groups ready to apply for full power noncommercial licenses during the window in October 2007, and then worked on development stuff. tumblr users nebraska-admiral and dothedu were legislative interns with Hannah Sassaman, and I'm really jealous of the work they did to get the Local Community Radio Act going!

Re: http://bthny.tumblr.com/post/2925195137

Right, so isn't referring to women on TANF as "TANF moms" redundant? I'm just saying, these women are more than mothers and it seems weird to refer to them as such. But I'm just being nitpicky! I really did like this column and appreciate the work that you do in Philadelphia.

Re: http://bthny.tumblr.com/post/466003708

I think that probably has a lot to do with perspective - I worked at an abortion fund, not a clinic, so we never had to deal with medicaid billing directly. On our end, it was relatively (relatively!) easy for women to obtain the initial medicaid funding, but I have no idea whether or not the reimbursements went through in a timely manner at all. I remember that the CRR (I think? maybe it was Guttmacher, or maybe they partnered?) did a report on this, though.

And yes, we should be friends! I've been reading The Abortioneers since it started, and although I left my job at the abortion fund to go to grad school, I want to focus my research on geographic access to reproductive healthcare so I still consider myself very much involved in repro justice things.

Re: http://bthny.tumblr.com/post/2615363852

oh my god I want to try the Hitachi Magic Wand. Sometimes it feels inappropriate to click "Like" or the heart button on tumblr even when it's meant as a sign of support for the person, not necessarily "liking" the situation. I think that it is particularly hard on tumblr when someone doesn't have replies enabled, because you don't necessarily want to reblog and share it with all of your followers.

Re: http://bthny.tumblr.com/post/1663744174

I guess the whole "make better choices" thing is what really makes me uncomfortable. I don't think that shaming people living in poverty for buying the food that is readily available and filling, if not nutritious, is the way to get them to change their ways. There is a whole mess of issues around physical and economic access as well as education that need to be addressed, and that post doesn't address the very real inequalities that exist in this country at all. It's not as easy as buying the more expensive organic food; if it was, I don't think that this would be the problem that it is.

I also think that what made me angrier than the post itself was that I saw it reblogged by people whose opinions I generally respect, and their comments were not critical at all.

Re: http://newleft.tumblr.com/post/1603580702

hence the movement towards "gender studies"! good response.
