Do you have a source you can cite for the 1973 date? All my Dar-Al Maaref editions are dated 1979, which is why when I first state it, I write "as best as I can tell." This article (http://www.middle-east-onli... says Dar-Al Maaref had the rights for 30 years, and it was published in 2007. If you have a definitive date by all means let me know so I can correct the date.

Walid, thanks for the tip. I'm working in Cairo right now so I wasn't aware that they made it to Beirut legally first (which of course makes sense because of the Francophone factor). I look forward to sharing some of the colloquial translations I've found dating back to the 50s, back when he was called "Timtim" in Arabic.

Dog drank too much Whisky. It's funny because he just keeps getting drunk throughout the album. Like this scene ends with Snowy sniffing out some more Whisky and then Tintin spanking him for getting even more drunk. Also, now whenever someone is drunk I'm just going to say that they are "tight."

Sam, I think you are right on here and I personally agree with you 100 percent. But Hergé I think would disagree with both of us. After-all, he was no Schultz:

More recently I've been confused at how much Hergé wanted to understand his work as a film. There are a shit load of references to films throughout the comics (they even have almost a whole floor dedicated to those references in the museum), and he apparently really wanted more of Tintin to be adapted into a film. I am really interested to see what you have to say about the 1961 Tintin and The Golden Fleece (link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wik... which Hergé had a big part in overseeing. I bring this up because I think Hergé always wanted a larger fan base than "comic-fans." So when you say that Comics are an art form for "single control freaks, while movies are vast collaborative efforts intended for mass consumption," I would argue that by the time that Studio Hergé was in full force with 20-plus employees that Tintin had become a vast collaborative effort intended for mass consumption. By the end, Tintin was essentially produced on an assembly line. And we have to remember that Hergé was part of signing over the film rights to Spielberg, allegedly claiming that he "thought Spielberg was the only person who could ever do Tintin justice." Ultimately, it is really questionable what the "original vision" of Tintin was in actuality as opposed to what we (as total Tintin-nerds) want that vision to be.

Well, in a way I think the "District 9" model is something that J.J. Abrams has understood pretty well for awhile. "Cloverfield" attempted to the same kinds of niche, no-name actors, hand held deal and "Star Trek," although it had the geek/nostalgia appeal, also on many levels did the same thing. That is why I saw "District 9" as part of tide - one which I am very excited about.

Also, maybe this is just me, but after I saw "District 9" I totally went home and tried to find out who the lead actor was because I was so impressed with his performance. In a sense I think that means I'm very tied down to the old model of celebrity, because I just want to see him in more and more things.

Anyways, this is a very well-written and thoughtful commentary!

Truly. My thing is that there has always been "Hipster Dudes" at both live shows, but since Ga Ga Ga Ga there was way more "Frat Dudes" at Spoon shows. Henceforth, I expect it to get frat as an Asher Roth song up in Phoenix's next U.S. Tour. SNL just compounds the problem.

Per usual, you are right sir. I apparently have a shitty rip that has been circulating online with only 9 songs and it looks like wrong track names. I was wondering why they broke the golden 10 format!

The main thing I've been baffled about is how not too long ago they were written off as Adult Contemporary and now are very much embraced as more hip than that. Alphabetical is still tops for me.
