Isnt this the same verizon that was warning like crazy that they're in a huge impending bandwidth crunch? Makes sense that they'd roll out this service AND do the double data promotion on phone plans they've had....

This is a good thing though; expensive, but for people out in the boonies or places where there's no other options, this fills a need, presumably.

Isnt this akin to saying that ARM needs to add complex instruction set and Floating Point? Yes, ARM chips are fast enough for phones, and power sipping, but it'd just be nice to have same specs as the Win-Tel boxes. (The counter-point to this, is, of course, that Apple DID switch from RISC based to actual intels, but that's a whole nother can of worms).

As a galaxy nexus guy, I also squirm looking at the specs, and wish they were 'better' (newer). But, maybe the phone is competitive enough for the majority of buyers. Maybe not. Clearly apple only mentions specs when it behooves them. (GPU on new iPad vs Tegra 3, but no mention of MPU cores/speed).

I say all of this not having tried the silly device, more just to put onto screen/ether my own internal struggle w/ spec battles

*with contract*. there's a whole other 'cheap' market. look at what cabbies are using, what teens are using in uk (low end bb's, mostly) etc.

seems to me this is more a function of ease of typing w/ or w/o a physical keyboard / adjusting search based on results than actual propensisty to scroll.

Very good key point I lost in the shuffle. I'd still like to see biases stated up front, like what you do when covering goog. I wonder if he thinks of himself as a journalists, especially when uncovering his big 'gets'/leaks.

Good post. Not sure that there's a problem w/ Arrington; as long as he continues to be clear and truthful. Clearly, this approach doesnt work for everyone (very very few people). What I took away from Kara was that Arrington is Arrington; just as (most of us) we generally know Trump is all bluster/self promotion, we generally know Arrington,.

However, we do NOT know most of Huffpost/AOL holdings, and just as ATD is associated w/ WSJ, journalists expect a certain 'distance' from what they cover. This strays a bit off topic, but this neutrality can be overboard; why should Trump get his 'birther' news when it was seemingly proven wrong? Or why do Edwards' girls get swept under the rug, or Dodd's finances as he calls out banks, rather than investigated?

Personally, I'd rather journalists be more like Arrington. Here's what so and so said, here's my biases, here's how I feel about it, and here are the source links. We dont need anyone to tell us what or how to think or disseminate as much anymore, with the ease at which we can investigate ourselves. Perhaps this is a young and naive approach, but that's my $.02

EDIT - I think Kara does a very nice job of balancing what I mentioned above with her ideals of neutrality. The private life, especially, is not how I would go about it, but I certainly respect her 50/50 split.

I think it's pretty intuitive, actually. I have this problem. You get to the end of a web page having not clicked on anything... then.... scroll all the way back up to go to the next site you want, or for site nav, since you didnt click on anything. This doesnt solve the site nav, but it does solve the first...

New subscribers aren't a good thing if your profit margin was 15%, and apple is now taking 30%; new subscribers means losses, in that model. The idea of this makes me chafe initially, and there may be anti-trust issues here, but I'll take the wait and see approach.

I have this in the n900; a side effect you dont think about is that it makes a little bit of noise everytime you touch the screen. Interested to see how the attached piezoelectric motors perform. I remember the bb storm having (unfounded) rumors of this tech

how about doctors (in a year, when they can do 30-60 fps and high res)? they already use stuff like this but getting rid of the wires makes staying sterile one step easier

What's interesting is that 2001 was also the bubble when they were also killed. Guess it proves that newspapers are a 'luxury' item. How many newsrooms/reporters think this way? I agree w/ Jeff - how many people will cut it out of their life like TV, turn online, and realize they arent missing anything?

I'm interested in social media, data visualization and representation, PR, advertising, and anything geeky.
I signed up for Twitter in July, didnt really get it, and now find it invaluable for work (I work @ motivequest, a social media consultancy - shameless self promotion in the website, as my blog is in the process of launching), school (northwestern), and play/community (I'm very involved with Rotary). It's been a fantastic tool to keep in touch with my friends, coupled with facebook and gchat.

I find myself using gchat to communicate with my 20 something friends who havent, or wont, 'get' twitter. It seems like a nice steppingstone. Thoughts?

I liked your response, and think it is a fantastic step in the right direction. However, I have one major comment (and I dont know anything about how you spend your time, so this may be completely misguided). There are 52 days left in the year; is 40 hours the best you can do? That's less than an hour a day. Also, I would venture a guess that you'll meet a lot of people and gain an opportunity that you wouldnt otherwise in doing some sort of 'community'/world service, directly applied to business. I challenge you to devote a full hour a day to service - blog about it, take videos, make it interesting, and think of how many other people you can not only meet for business, but inspire!
