From the commenter side, the moderation makes the process feel like I am being judged worthy of publication.  That's a sucky feeling in social media and should be avoided if at all possible. There are tons of technology solution to address comment spam concerns - why not use one??&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Side note to Drew: If an advertiser is that afraid of comment spammers, should they be advertising in a blog environment? You can't really have it both ways: Either accept the risk inherent in a social environment, or go somewhere more broadcast-y and control the entire message.
