Or better still why don't you either go buy yourself a Windows machine or install it on your current machine via boot camp and set it as the default boot partition?

Unless you're forced to use Macs at work this is a non-issue, if you want something Windows like go get Windows and be done with it

Actually I'd go with that one too, given that it ran OK in Snow Leopard was there really any essential reason to drop it for Lion?

Reverse 'natural' scrolling can be switched off in system preferences.
You can turn off Dashboard as a separate space so it behaves the old way too.
Lastly many of the multitouch gestures can be reconfigured or turned off in system preferences too.

It's a bit of a faff to get things back the way you want them, and I'm sure there will be some things that just won't go, but these changes might make your Lion experience a bit more comfortable

Actually I'm still not sure about Siri, it sounds really cool but I wonder if a lot of users will play with it initially and then get bored and carry on using their devices the way they did before?

I'd make the gesture interface more consistent at least in Apple's own applications. If I can two finger swipe to move backwards and forwards in Safari, why can't I do it in the App store when it's a similar interface?

I would also get rid of all the hideous faux leather and wood interfaces on things like iCal and Garage Band (same in iOS 5 too!). If this really is a super modern operating system why are the interface designs going backwards? The music player in iOS 5 on the iPad looks more like a cheap1970's stereo than a modern cutting edge program! (sorry I know that's off topic!)

I think you can turn that facility off.

In System Preferences, under General just untick the box that says "Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps"

I assume this will work for Office as well as the ordinary Apple applications, anyway it's easy enough to give it a try and see if it does the trick for you.

Maybe you've already tried it but I just thought I'd mention it.

I think that makes a lot of sense Luke.

Though it does look a teensy bit slanted. iPhone users can do what the iPhone will *let* them do quickly and efficiently. For most users this is absolutely great and you do get the "It just works" feeling because of that.

However for some folks who want more fine grained control over their phones the iPhone environment can be incredibly frustrating. I'm not sure exactly what is in iOS 5 but things like no status data on the lock screen or not being able to select your own notification tones for texts and so on can really be annoying.

Just in case you're thinking I'm being biased I should admit I have a foot in both camps. I have an iPhone 3GS and a Samsung galaxy s2.

I love slick interface on the iPhone, it's consistent and effective and as you said despite being an older model it still feels like a good phone because it does what I need it to without noticeable lag.

The Samsung is a different kettle of fish, it's a bit more fiddly in some respects and less polished BUT much more configurable.
Don't like the supplied soft keyboard? Fine download one suits you better and replace the stock one.
The same applies for the SMS application, the e-mail application, and many others.
Want to download and use your own tones for SMS notifications? Yep can do that too.

From my experience I would say to folks don't worry about specs or which platform is better than the other, just figure out what you want from your phone and pick the platform that suits you best.

We had similar problems when utilities were deregulated in the UK.

For us the sales reps working for the power companies would fake customer signatures. Folks didn't know anything was wrong until they got a bill from a company they didn't expect.
