Thanks for the heads-up. Time to start a saving plan. I hope Walmart or some other providers come up with a low-cost clinic for the basics (including BP, cholesterol, women's health care and men's basic health care.) We need some lower cost alternatives.

Well, it does actually cost money to produce an ebook. There's generally some reformatting and tweaking to get it right, there's uploading of artwork (which sometimes has to be tweaked because the original is both front/spine/back) and so on.

I never understand this request since no one asks for audio with a paperback (or paperback with an audio.) Maybe it would be nice to have, but I wouldn't want every book I buy to sneak in an extra dollar to the cost just to have both. I usually buy whatever version is cheapest.

Search results for the last one...maybe even two years have not been as good as they used to be. You get the same results over and over and miss many. I used to be able to shop for items via google--but now I have better luck trolling actual retailers to see if they have the items. Google simply doesn't display a realistic number of hits for small retailers or even medium ones. You get Amazon and Ebay and a few stores that are eclectic that may or may not even have the item. You get a TON of Amazon affiliates who simply have the item listed -- which then directs you right back to Amazon.

I think Amazon knows what it is doing--summer is probably the slowest sales period for books. Everyone is at the beach, traveling or looking for something fun. They need to grab a book or three--and here are Sunshine deals providing incentive to pick up a few good books.

Whether this does anything to the higher priced books or not probably doesn't matter to Amazon so much as maintaining interest and sales...

I'm not a huge fan of Gaiman's books; can take or leave them, but for a POLITICIAN to gripe about ANYONE getting paid for a speaking engagement is gross stupidity and rude. Pols do NOTHING but give speeches before, during and after office--and guess what? They expect to be paid. When not getting paid directly, they expect donations. PTTTH to the lot of them.

Does "biggest online ebook community" mean largest number of signed-up members? Just curious. I would imagine it would be hard to compare to Amazon's Kindle community (which doesn't require signing up) or even B&N ebook community (which seems large, but is a mix of ebook and regular readers.)

It's my impression (perhaps incorrectly) that ALL license lending to libraries have expirations of some sort. Sure, Harpers might be less than others, but any books in the program get cycled through some sort of licensing and none of them are forever. And then there's MacMillan who doesn't do library lending at all.

In the end, some enterprising company is going to work agreements with publishers to lend in such a way that it's profitable, but reasonable. Whether that is libraries who start to charge patrons 25 cents per lent book or a private company, there has to be a secure money stream (and a repeatable one) for publishers/authors/agents to make money. Right now, publishers can make some money via the licensing, but obviously there are a lot of kinks to be worked out. HarperCollins needed to do a better job with the announcement. It's the PR that caused problems more so that 26 checkouts.

Publishers have to start acting like they care about the customer (reader). Since all lending licenses expire, they could have said, "Here is what our options were and here is where we are going." They could have laid it out as offering MORE to the reader, rather than less.

Meanwhile, cheap ebooks are still doing well.

Oh--and restricting the Philly library by geography? Another gaff. Again, there had to be a better way to organize it--or just not say anything at all until you know if you can even legally work such a restriction.
