If doing coke is depraved, is doing lots of it more depraved? No. I've spoken to people who have read the book and they have all said it is way darker, obviously - and I never went expecting the book, but I wanted something more.

It was as if Scorsese was speaking to an audience of years ago. If you're going for depraved, go for it. You can still do it, still communicate a darker, and therefore far more real side to the characters - depth to their hunger, not a comedic reflection via midgets and tits, of the true animal that is an all-out fiend, without alienating a large portion of your audience. As you said, series have numbed us to everything, so why not push the movie. If this was his 'return' to movies being hardcore, I'll stick to my series.

The closest this movie got to showing the serious side of greed and addiction was the final scene with Jordan and his wife - when he rips open the couch for coke, then punches her and takes the child. The argument they had earlier in the movie - on the bed, the one signaling the downward turn of their marriage, was actually cute. I smiled through a lot of it.

To your point of character changes.

We don't see a change in Jonah Hill. He may have become slightly more confident, and he shouts a lot, and is a rad office mascot - if I worked there I'd never take him seriously except for the fact that Jordan had his back. Ben Affleck told people to 'get the fuck out' way better in Boiler Room. Jonah Hill is Jonah Hill throughout the entire movie. Look, he was great, but big character transformations?

To that of Jordan's. We see five minutes of him as a naive kid, during which you couldn't give a fuck what he had to say, because Matthew was busy showing everyone how to own a movie, then we see him as he is. 'Arrogant' is not a suitable description of a lead character like this.

I agree, the only worthwhile monologue besides Matt's was the IPO one. The others, weak. The final, 'I'm staying' speech had me falling asleep. Which I'm disappointed about because Leo is one of my favourites.

Like I said though, I was expecting Scorsese, something a little more gritty. This couldn't have been more of a Hollywood reflection of a real life story if got down on it's knees and offered you a blowjob in exchange for a sit down with that booking agent friend of yours.

Re: This Month I'm Reading: January

I've never read anything by King, which is weird because I love that genre. Doctor Sleep sounds like it may be a good start.
Re Bukowski, that's exactly why I love his stuff so much.
