Thanks for the smile :) Can't wait to see you in a few days! Looking forward to these mysterious big changes that are coming :)

Re: http://teachingmusic.tumblr.com/post/15190420856

I teach 4 sections of Music Appreciation, and am still not exactly sure what to do with them. I want to shift them into something unique, modern, and interesting, but I'm having trouble nailing down a definite way to do this. I would love to do a ton of composition, but I don't have consistent access to computers. Wish I could provide more help, but I'll be looking here to see what others are doing, for sure!

Re: Free Technology for Teachers: 7 Tools Students Can Use to Create Music Online

Thanks for sharing these great resources, Richard! I'd like to add one to the list, the brother product to Aviary's "Roc," which is "Myna." Aviary Myna is very similar to garage band, and lets you sequence the music you create in Roc along with recordings you make on your own and loops from their Creative-Commons loop libraries to make your own music. I'm looking forward to trying Myna this coming week as part of a free music workshop for students on the Cayman Islands!

Re: Today

Hey Taylor! I especially agree with your final assertion: "If, after a student leaves my class, they smile and say, 'I had a fun time. I played laser beams.' I will consider that a resounding success." After all, isn't our number one goal to help establish positive relationships between students and the art of music? They can't exactly do that if they're not enjoying it, now can they?

Re: Two Great Opportunities To Do SOMETHING and Support Music Education

Joe, thank you SO much for contributing to and supporting the Innovate Music Education campaign! The possibilities are really endless if we can get enough people behind this project - the trick is going to be getting folks to step up and TAKE ACTION! A click to vote for MENC takes nothing but a second, and a donation to iSchoolMusic's campaign could be the difference between having that Big Mac value meal tonight or not. A small sacrifice for the efforts to support Music Education, don't you think?

Re: Digital Immigrants: How Public Education is Playing Catch-Up With Technology

I couldn't agree with you more, Kathy... the push for technology in music education needs to start at the top. If we aren't educating our pre-service music teachers on HOW to use this technology, how can we expect them to implement it? Heaven knows teachers don't have time to REALLY learn how to use this stuff once they're in the field... They need to learn it as a part of their preparation. Thanks for the comment and the kind words :)

Re: What I’m Reading: A Shared Notebook

Thanks, Tom! What an incredible use case you have found for Evernote by using it to manage your students and record parent communication. I can definitely see that being a part of my everyday use of Evernote in the future.

I have done a lot of research on GTD, but haven't actually implemented my own system for it yet... have you found it has been helpful to your organizational system?

Re: Facebook Friending 101 for Schools

I am a senior in my undergrad and am currently student teaching, and as coincidence has it, I came across this post while sitting in an ethics seminar in-service day... We spent a lot of time talking about cyber-bullying and ways to prevent it, and I was very disappointed with the attitude of most of the room, which was to avoid social networks completely. Vicki, you do a fantastic job of reinforcing the fact that we are teaching digital natives who need to be prepared to be members of our society, and that INCLUDES digital citizenship!

Thank you for this incredible resource; I look forward to the other posts in this series!

Re: STN Weeks 6-8: End of Secondary

I couldn't agree more. I am going to try it with my students tomorrow during student teaching... I can't use the band room because of marching band pictures that are going on all day, so I'll have to use my keyboard lab.
