I practically forced it on my colleague; I couldn't stop yammering on about it. He finished it recently, so now we're both yammering on about it. He's rereading it now, and though I'm enjoying my current book, I'm a little jealous. It's an astonishing book. We don't quite want to let it go.

Re: http://ayse.tumblr.com/post/1045568991

I should, Ben! Let me work on it this week. :)

Re: Bush Campaign Manager and Former RNC Chair, Ken Mehlman: I'm Gay - Politics - The Atlantic

"He said that he 'really wished' he had come to terms with his sexual orientation earlier, 'so I could have worked against [the Federal Marriage Amendment]' and 'reached out to the gay community in the way I reached out to African Americans.'"

Mehlman is still dissembling or disingenuous. Why does he need to come to terms w/ his sexuality to work against the FMA or reach out to the gay community? Does one have to be an out gay person to have principles? He isn't African American (presumably) yet he "reached out" to that community. Pardon me if I reach out to punch him in the teeth.

That said, I wish Mehlman the best in his personal life. I hope he will be happier living his life honestly and openly. In his professional life, however, I can't but help wish him many days of difficult reflection about his own cowardice and complicity during a period of heightened insanity in this country. Many, many people were deeply hurt--materially hurt--by the vile machinations of people whose power he protected and ensured. His silence had very real consequences, and I hope he will forgive those of us who look askance at his attempts to justify his past silence. It is inadequate indeed.

Re: Why Do You Do It the Way You Do It? by John Warner - The Morning News

Collected Stories of Lydia Davis
The Girl Who Played with Fire, Stieg Larsson
The Little Stranger, Sarah Waters
Cloud Atlas, David Mitchell
Original Bliss, A. I think I was at about elbow-level, and he's so realistic looking that I was apprehensive about getting too close. It really felt like he might strike out at any moment. You can see wrinkles and pores and freckles and dry skin. It's unreal (because it's so real--ha!). Mueck is amazing.
