Contrast this contentious project with the depression projects such as the Boulder dam and others. No Dept. of the Environment then and durable, effective projects helped enrich the USA. Now, with a DoE, huge expensive energy projects are mooted that will become immediate white elephants. What's the lesson here I wonder ?

The selection of Al Gore and Barack Obama as Nobel recipients is a pure political gesture, and as such besmirches and belittles the hundreds of worthy citizens who genuinely deserved this once lauded and covetted honour.

For shame.

We are moving through a Kafkaesque time where science and politics have melded. Churchill and Adlai Stevenson warned of it, and it will pass I'm sure, thanks in large part to ordinary people making themselves heard.

The disillusionment with President Obama is all the more bitter because of the uncritical and euphoric reception from the MSM; and many people unfortunately still believe them. Here in NZ, anti-Obama feeling is being tagged with the extreme right wing label, ignoring the fact that many who now protest were one time supporters.

I count as civil servants everyone whose income comes from the state. Includes public hospital staff, teachers, local body roadsweepers etc. (I think they would have voted in similar %'s to the general public prior to Lange.) Under this idea the pool of voters and the numbers of non voting C/S's would eventually stabilise, and a tax arrangement and redistribution policy that treated both groups fairly would evolve.

As an addition I'd increase the number of MP's but pay them nothing but genuine expenses, and decrease the number of ministers and pay them heaps, to get the best possible people.

Every civil servant and beneficiary pays absolutely zero tax. Including zero GST, but loses their vote.

With the embarassment of our outdated and idiotic "anti-nuclear" (read anti-American) law hanging like an albatross around our necks, the SAS presence means we are still there when it counts.

I understand Helen lost the PR war against the SAS when they appointed Wilson Whineray as honourary commandant in chief, her impulse was to disband the oufit totally.
