Actual scientific proof that PNW is the one of the most introverted and closed minded regions in the country.

And this has nothing to do with how good or bad the WSJ is, these are the findings of nearly a decade of research by a Cambridge professor. Are the Seattle propagandist types going to start trying to bash Cambridge now?

Re: Whence does the bad vibe come? - I Hate Seattle

Seattle people aren't liberals, they are like some ridiculous one-dimensional caricature of what conservatives portray when they make fun of "liberals." Giving money to drug addicts to buy more drugs is not compassionate or progressive -- all this accomplishes is to make feeble-minded Seattletards feel good about themselves while making the problem even worse.

Re: Thank God I found this site! - I Hate Seattle

I'm glad that you actually put effort into your job and want to help people. It's worth pointing out that the only people that act this way in Seattle seem to be not from here!

A few months ago some relatives came to visit. I never recommend anyone to come here, but they came up with the idea themselves and seemed really excited about it, so I didn't say anything negative as to just let them enjoy their vacation. However, after a few days they observed that everyone in Seattle seems too drunk, stoned, or just plain too incompetent to do their jobs!

Re: 445 sex offenders within a 2 mile radius of my home - I Hate Seattle

Seattle is FAR worse than any other city:

Seattle: 544 offenders, in a city of ~0.6 million
Chicago: 628 offenders in a city of nearly 3 million
NYC area including NJ: 1320 offenders, and the population of that combined area is ~9 million

(source: data from state sex offender registries, aggregated at http://www.familywatchdog.us)

So on a per capita basis, Seattle has 4x HIGHER concentration of sex offenders than Chicago and nearly 8x HIGHER than NYC. There's really nothing left to argue at this point -- the facts speak for themselves.

Re: THANK THE LORD I FOUND YOU GUYS! - I Hate Seattle

I know how you feel, it's such a bizarre "Emperor's new clothing" feeling because it's so obvious how fucked up and socially retarded this place is, and most people put so much effort in to trying to convince themselves otherwise.

Anyway, other than getting the fuck out of here the next best thing is to travel as much as possible. It doesn't even really matter where, literally any other city in the world the people seem so much more normal and open and friendly. Even if you don't have much time/money for a big trip, just hop across the border to Vancouver, it is like a night and day difference compared to Seattle.

Re: Seattle Times Article - I Hate Seattle

As usual though they only get it half right:

"people are so nice in these passing situations..."

Complete bullshit. Seattle people have no manners, no class, and generally act like they were raised in a barn. If I say hello to someone in my apartment building, if I'm really lucky they might make an unintelligible grunting noise while staring at my feet. Nobody says "excuse me". Ever. Seriously I have tried pretending to not notice someone in the store and they will just stand there with a vacant look on their until I eventually move. And if I say excuse me to someone who is rudely blocking the aisle, they will give me the dirtiest look for breaking the unwritten rule that direct communication between strangers is forbidden. People do not hold the door for each other, and this is the only place I have ever been shoulder checked while holding the door for someone else. The customer service here is consistently the worst I have ever experienced ever, in the world. I mean, it is bad by third world standards.

So seriously Seattle, you need to stop it with the broken record about how polite you think you are. The natives here really have no redeeming qualities whatsoever.

Re: First day of summer - I Hate Seattle

it seems to be a bit of a dichotomy. The reason we complain about the transit is that nobody actually *lives* in downtown because it's a ghost town after 7pm, has no real supermarket, and almost every restaurant is extremely overpriced with mediocre food and awful service. Trying to use transit here when going to and from someplace other than downtown, it can often take 2+ hours for something that would take 20 minutes by car.

I recommend extending your stay and going to Vancouver for a few days. After getting used to Seattle it will blow you away. I still don't get why Seattle people act like their town is above criticism when there's a MUCH better city only a few hours away. If that doesn't work for you then take a day trip to Victoria, there's a ferry which takes a couple of hours.

Re: Seattleite response to criticism cheat sheet - I Hate Seattle

11. Scour the internet for any disparaging remarks about Seattle or the Northwest, and anonymously flame anyone who dares make them. I was just thinking to make a post about the exact same thing! This is something I see AT LEAST once a week in Seattle: a driver will get so bent out of shape over having to wait 3 seconds for a pedestrian that has the right of way that they will then mash the gas pedal to show everyone what a hurry they are in, only to slam on the brakes immediately afterward because there is a red light they would have had to stop at anyway. Either that or a car will blast through and intersection well after the light has changed and people are already crossing the street, narrowly missing killing someone. But the instant you get on the expressway (you know where it actually MAKES SENSE to drive fast) all that right-foot bravado suddenly disappears. It's like the freeway entrance ramps are lined with valium.

16. I have the exact same thing in my building. The only way I can describe just how much broadstripe sucks to people who don't live here is that I would be beside myself with joy if only I could go back to Comcast. Yeah, it's that bad. Perfect example of good ol' Northwest work ethic.

Re: A mini Bio - I Hate Seattle

Yeah, I realize that if you're from Seattle you've been brainwashed from a very early age to hate on all things California, but as a disinterested third party (not from CA and not planning to move there), I would have to disagree.

I was expecting it to be dirty and filled with homeless even worse than Seattle, but what I observed firsthand was the complete opposite. WAY fewer homeless and MUCH cleaner than Seattle. You could compare neighrbood by neighborhood, their Chinatown is much nicer, the waterfront tourist areas are much cleaner, the downtown is much cleaner, the public transit is much better and doesn't have the BO stink like Seattle buses, etc. I could go on and on, but overall the most noticeable thing was just how *normal* the people and everything seemed in SF. I mean, how fucked up does a place have to be for San Francisco to seem like a bastion of normalcy in comparison?

Sure, SF is more expensive in absolute terms, but I would still say Seattle is the more overpriced of the two.

Re: A mini Bio - I Hate Seattle

So your grand conclusion is.... it's all the fault of outsiders?

Let's see, last time I checked there are around 40k Microsoft employees in the Puget Sound area, out of a population of some 4 million. So if you're trying to claim that this 1% of people has had such a profound effect on the area, then you people didn't have any personality to begin with. Also, the founders of Microsoft, Bill Gates and Paul Allen are SEATTLE NATIVES, so if you think the company's culture is messed up, you don't have to go very far to assign blame.

I made a visit to the SF bay area recently. Compared to Seattle, people there are way more friendly and outgoing, have good hygiene don't dress (or smell) like hobos, and generally just take better care of themselves. Even in relatively suburban areas in the valley, there is way more activity every night of the week, people go out more and generally seem much happier. Oh, and they don't drive like complete retards. And yet, there are way more tech workers and way more transplants than here (hell, it was an agricultural area until a few decades ago).

Pretty much any major American city these days has at least as many transplants as Seattle, and it hasn't caused anywhere near the same level of antisocial passive-aggressive bullshit anywhere else.

My current theory is that Seattle was always backwards and socially retarded. It's just that nobody here realized it because this place was so isolated and homogeneous until fairly recently when the exposure to the outside world grew. It was at this time that observations began to be made (by non-natives) about the Seattle Freeze and other aspects of the fucked up local culture, which has resulted in these sorts of post hoc fallacies and shoot-the-messenger reactions.

Re: top 4 seattlesuck stories - I Hate Seattle

Where do you live that allows chickens?? One is the people you describe who are so self-absorbed they will walk right in front of a speeding bus. The other is people who seem to think jaywalking is the most heinous sin imaginable and will not cross against the light even when the street is completely deserted and there are obviously no cars around for miles, but will give a dirty look to anyone else who does.

Re: This isn't a city - I Hate Seattle

Yeah, it's funny... I grew up in typical suburbia, but even there we had way more 24-hour stores and restaurants, and most other places stayed open later than they do here. Seriously, it was easier to go somewhere late at night in the 'burbs than it is in Seattle, which is supposed to be so hip and cool and happening.

This isn't a city, it's a giant retirement home.

Re: It's not their job to do their job - I Hate Seattle

I have so many customer service horror stories since moving here that I would need surgery to fix the carpal tunnel before I could manage to type out half of them. In fact, the very first day I arrived, the card key for the garage didn't work so I called the temp housing company repeatedly for 3 days with no result. Finally I went to speak directly with the manager in the garage. Apparently the temp housing company never bothered to register/pay for the parking, even after my many calls -- they just figured that it must be my fault somehow and never bothered to actually check up on it. After I emailed them the parking manager's cell number along with his description of the situation they FINALLY fixed it a couple of days later, without so much as any sort of explanation or apology.

And it's basically been more of the same ever since.

The thing that really gets me though is how it permeates all levels of society here -- unlike other cities, there's no "nice part of town" you can escape to. Even if I decide to splurge a bit and to go a fancy restaurant or a high-end store it's still the same shitty attitude and lack of work ethic as anywhere else.

Re: Grunge on the radio - I Hate Seattle

haha, thanks for the sentiment, but I am not spleenvent. I am still me.

Oh and in case you didn't know, Seattle rules of etiquette strictly forbid any sort of Christian reference. Because of course you wouldn't want to offend their delicate sensibilities with such parochial misogynistic affronts to the sacred feminine.

It would therefore be more appropriate to instead liken your enjoyment of these posts to the recent Wiccan Sabbat of Imbolc, where Goddess has bestows upon all Her children the fertile seeds of (secular) renewal.

Anyway, you know, just FYI.

Re: have you noticed how skanky the women are here? - I Hate Seattle

Heartbroken, I don't think any reasonable person would take anything you said as being homophobic or intolerant, if that's what you're worried about.

But I agree that people in Seattle/PNW seem to have a childish attitude regarding sexual matters or simply the human body. It also brings to mind the Fremont parade, which the locals seem to think is so clever and rebellious and edgy. It's like a group of 5th graders on a field trip to an art museum, giggling every time they catch a glimpse of bare breast in a Renaissance-era painting.

Re: have you noticed how skanky the women are here? - I Hate Seattle

Actually, "skanky" would be an improvement over most of the women I see on a daily basis -- the lumberjack comment is much more apt for the vast majority.

Also, why are women in the NW so consistently overweight? Seattle is supposed to be one of the "fittest" cities in the US, but it seems like someone forgot to mention that to the women here. That and they can't be bothered trying to make themselves look presentable, and have bitchy attitudes to boot. And my friends wonder why I only seem to date Asian girls...

Re: Visited once, never again - I Hate Seattle

Overall, city-data.com is a very good resource, but the Seattle forum cracks me up -- ANY mention of the freeze is STRICTLY forbidden anywhere other the the "Official Seattle Freeze Thread." They are literally such nazis about it that they will go through every single thread and delete any sentence that even hints at it. Come on, it's like if the Detroit forum had only one "Official Detroit Crime Thread", and if you mentioned that your car was broken into in any other thread, that sentence would be deleted. Utterly ridiculous. However, I've been in the Northwest long enough to know that extreme pettiness and complete intolerance towards anything other that the official majority opinion is basically just par for the course here.
