Love this. Easy to forget. Some rules are to be used judiciously when writing reports to clients and/or in/about China. (e.g. Offend someone). But point well taken.

Seriously? This appears very oversensitive. And isn't "The Connie Chung effect" really a powerful portrayal of the shift of power - from old white men to young powerful Asian females. I think the world will be a better place as this shift happens.

Hey Jonathan, thanks for your comment. You say this doesn't work as a real life example - well, sorry, but it IS a real life example. This actually happened.

As for hailing a car, might happen in Canada. Might not happen in New Zealand. In an idealised world where everyone is nice to strangers, it may happen. In the real world, strangers often don't help each other. That's why social media is interesting - it creates a level of relationship and awareness that's a bit like what we used to call "neighbours".

My point ... it's not all about copying, some of what's going on is original. Okay, well perhaps Tencent is not the best example to use there.

And wow, 4 QQ accounts fail? Wow. My experience has been different (admittedly in a short time) in that I've been able to use English characters, and I'm finding the integration with Pengyou.com relatively smooth, even for a Google-translate-using-Laowai like myself.

Same with Sina Weibo, it sent a confirmation to my Gmail address with no problems.

So maybe I'm still a newbie and have only seen the good side, maybe you're extremely unlucky, or maybe the answer is somewhere in between...
