Crawford has played there, but it's been several years. But the numbers say his defense in left has been good. If his hamstring is healthy, I think he could cover enough ground if we had to throw him in center. Agree the arm is questionable, but if we're playing him in left anyway, is the difference that meaningful? Besides, we're taking about a scenario where Kemp and Ethier are both out. I think Puig is also worth a shot in this scenario. The point is, do we need to keep Schumaker around JUST in case this specific possibility comes about? I'm saying no.

Re: Is the end nigh for Luis Cruz?

According to the metrics, he shouldn't be, at least in the infield.

Re: Is the end nigh for Luis Cruz?

Those aren't good reasons. If they're throwing Ethier out in center, there's no reason Crawford or even Puig couldn't handle it in a pinch. Keeping Schumaker for that makes no sense. And if you want to platoon Ellis (which means giving him 1/3 of the plate appearances and the platoon partner 2/3), Schu is a bad opt-in because his hitting is only marginally better against righties but his fielding is way, way worse. He really has no business playing at second base. We'd be better off trying Gordon or something. Or if we want to just give Ellis a day off, Punto or Hairston would be just fine. So really, we don't need all three.

Re: Is the end nigh for Luis Cruz?

Schumaker, Punto, and Hairston are more or less the same guy, except Schumaker is bad at defense. Why do we need three of them? A healthy SVS can hit, at least.

Re: Is the end nigh for Luis Cruz?

Not just Cruz, right?...

Let's say we have 12 pitchers (that's only 7 relievers and 5 starters, but maybe we can juggle a reliever and the 5th starter between the majors and AAA to mostly have 8 relievers when we need)... So that means 13 position players. When Crawford and Van Slyke are back, that means we have the following position players:

1. AJ Ellis
2. FedEx
3. AGon
4. MEllis
5. Hanley
6. Uribe
7. Puig
8. Ethier
9. Kemp
10. Crawford
11. Van Slyke

...and that only leaves 2 more spots for Punto, Schumaker, Hairston, and Cruz. So, Cruz will definitely be gone and probably one more guy, right?

Re: What will replace my beloved Google Reader?

I've switched to Netvibes. Maybe something like,

"Mr. Romney is saying that he will cut taxes for everybody, drastically increase defense spending, not cut Medicare or Social Security, and still balance the budget. I'll admit, that sounds pretty great, but those promises literally don't add up. It's as if he is telling the American people, 'I have a diet plan where you can eat all the pie and ice cream and cheeseburgers you want, you'll never have to eat another vegetable again, you won't have to exercise or leave your couch, and I promise you won't gain a pound!' Well, if it sounds like some kind of fantasy that's too good to possibly be true, that's because it is. But the American people are smarter than he realizes, and they won't fall for that kind of pandering."

My point is, you can call him out on how ridiculous and incompatible and dishonest his promises are by painting him as a shameless panderer (which fits his reputation anyway), and mocking him, without having to say "liar".

Re: Election Law and ‘The Voting Wars’

What are Mr. Hasen's thoughts about the constitutionality of implementing a universal voting system such as in they have in Australia? Spending more on defense and not on social programs is a legitimate viewpoint, even if I happen to disagree with it, and you're right Kevin, that it's entirely consistent with what Republicans have been doing for decades.

However, Republican enthusiasm for defense spending is *not* consistent with "fiscal conservatism".

Re: Lies, Damn Lies, and Mitt Romney

Some words: Shameless.
