How odd that this particular company reached out so much to bloggers and then got persnickity at one comment that was not a *glowing* review. Do they not understand that individual bloggers are beholden to no one? We do not have advertisers or patrons to satisfy, so we tend to express ourselves freely.

As I mention to you in my tweet, I was essentially blacklisted by a local company for writing about a performance that I had also given them a lot of free publicity for. Overall, my review was very positive. I was lukewarm on a solo danced by the company's artistic director. . . Oops. I have not heard one peep from them since; not one email from them in a year. And they used to send me PR stuff every other week.

Re: Superstars Night 2

Thanks for doing the recap-- I didn't bother to watch the second night of the show myself. How wonderful that you were able to see so much. The new piece sounds fantastic. They are bringing Sweet Honey in the Rock with them, but only for one of the performances.

Re: Halloween & Center Stage at Swan Lake Samba Girl

So this is a straight-to-tv release? That's kind of sad. The show had too many problems for me to rate it as highly as Doug does, but it was nevertheless a nice departure from the typical dance show format. Hopefully there will be another season and they'll work out the kinks.
I haven't had a chance to catch many episodes of SYTYCD yet this season (crazy rehearsal schedule conflicts), so I'm glad to know I'm not missing much. Perhaps the excitement of it being a new show is wearing off?

Re: Step it up and … Finally … Dance! at Swan Lake Samba Girl

I too got on board with this show thanks to the third episode. I think Bravo has to be in part about the bitchy gay diva thing because that's what audiences have come to expect (and let's face it , it can be entertaining). From the previews it looks like next week is going to have some stepping. Interesting that so far they haven't done anything in classical idioms. I'd be really curious to see how people like Janelle would fare in that kind of challenge.

Re: Dance in America’s Great Outdoors Special on PBS Monday Night at Swan Lake Samba Girl

This sounds really interesting. I think what you said about the focus on the process interfering with the magic of the performance is thought provoking. On one hand, it can deepen one's appreciation of the work through better understanding the challenges, but on the other hand sometimes we just want to see the darn performance. One thing I like about the "DVD age" is that we can choose to learn more about the process through the extra features-- or not. Anyway, I'll be curious to see how it plays out in this special.

Re: Spammers Are Making Comment Control Difficult at Swan Lake Samba Girl

That's a drag! I know the feeling because one of the email accounts I use at work gets hundreds of spam messages a day and I feel like I spend hours just dealing with that.

I haven't had any problems with spam, but I'm on wordpress.com which uses akismet, which only lets through 3 or 4 per week. As is Natalia, I'm very satisfied with it.

Re: quodlibet - dance a day offline

I like your idea. One of the things I liked about the movie was that it had kids who are of an age where the opposite sex is disgusting and made of cooties learn about safe touch. Not in those words exactly, but learning ballroom dancing at that age seems to teach a really healthy, positive, and respectful way to interact with the opposite sex.

Re: quodlibet - feedback

Yay!

Re: Dinner and a Dance Performance While Blindfolded? at Swan Lake Samba Girl

Yeah...no thanks. I consider myself a very open person but this is a little out there for my tastes. I would consider being blindfolded while eating if I was alone at home with my husband and he was feeding my chocolate dipped strawberries, but I'm just not into the idea of some stranger stroking me with a feather while I'm eating. Ack.

Re: Dance Mag Spills Beans on Center Stage 2 at Swan Lake Samba Girl

Yeah, seriously, what's up with hip hop vs ballet? What about all the other countless fabulous dance genres out there. I want to see a salsa vs ballet movie. Or modern vs swing. They have done that in Washington with the Opera. They simulcast La Boheme this year to a cinema (for pay) and to a big outdoor screen on the National Mall (for free). They do a great job of reaching out to younger audiences. They have a program called Generation O for the under-35 set, with discounts, happy hours, lectures, and even free performances from time to time. They're cultivating their future full-price-paying audiences-- very savvy. I think the dance world should take a hint from their strategy, and hopefully also do more than the Nutcracker in the future. There's nothing like a live performance, but seeing it close up on a huge cinema screen would be a close second.

Re: Ailey Season Begins Tonight at Swan Lake Samba Girl

I have to wait till the spring to see them, but at least they are coming to DC. I think every artist should read it. It is a wonderfully practical and realistic approach to unlocking your creative process. It was first introduced to me in the choreography and composition class I took, and has since been referred to many times. Twyla Tharp is one person I'd love to have dinner with.

Re: Three Sailors Made My Night at Swan Lake Samba Girl

This is a wonderful writeup-- I feel like I was there!
Ever since I read Somewhere (the recent biography about Jerome Robbins), I've wanted to see Fancy Free. After learning that had morphed into On the Town, I went back to see the movie, only to find out that they'd scrapped his choreography for someone else's in the movie! Boo.

I like sitting in the center first level balcony as well if I'm in the Kennedy Center Opera House. If you are in the concert hall, which is much longer, you need to sit on the sides or orchestra to see any detail. The height gives you a better sense of the formations in the choreography. I would like to experience it from closer up too, because seeing the dancers' expressions can give you a much better sense. For example, when I saw Ballet Hispanico's Palladium Nights we were in the balcony of the concert hall and because the acting was so important to the choreography, some of the dancing fell flat for me. I had a feeling that if I could see what was going on in their faces, I'd have a much more cohesive view of the dance as a whole.

Re: A Weekend of Latin Dance With Two Ballet Legends at Swan Lake Samba Girl

Sounds like an amazing weekend! Interesting what you say about preferring to watch tango in barefoot. I'm not sure I agree, but then again I've never actually seen barefoot tango, so who am I to say that. Those heels just add something, though.

About flamenco, there's a DC based blog about flamenco by a flamenco guitarist that might interest you. I forget the address but there's a link from my blog (it's either miguelito's blog or dc flamenco). It's just interesting to get the perspective from the musician rather than the dancer, particularly because the musicians do interact so much with the dancers.

Re: Mesmerizing Traditional Thai Dance Versus Dumb White People Tricks at Swan Lake Samba Girl

I'm not sure I submitted the link correctly-- here it is again
http://atimetodance.wordpre...

Re: Mesmerizing Traditional Thai Dance Versus Dumb White People Tricks at Swan Lake Samba Girl

Absolutely fascinating. Thanks for your description of Thai dance. I have always thought the forms of it were beautiful and it looks like the technique requires just as much training and discipline as classical western forms. Your description of the whole performance definitely helped me imagine the whole thing. Thanks for a good writeup!

This summer when I was at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival, one of the featured cultures was the Mekong River, which runs through Thailand among other SE Asian countries. I saw some dancing that may be like what you described, and videotaped it. You can see it here, the dancing starts at about 3:00 if your timer is counting up.

Re: ABT Marathon Weekend Wrap-Up at Swan Lake Samba Girl

I can't wait to see them when they come to the Kennedy Center!
Thanks for the detailed write up.
