Not sure what you mean by “folks like AMJ” but whatever.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;I’ll admit, my reaction was way out of line. Probably comes from a year’s worth of emails asking why the hell I write about a defunct band like R.E.M. but that’s no excuse. I apologize for my outburst, especially the “old townie” part. Considering that that’s what I’ve been on my way to becoming, it was inappropriate.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;I have my own quibbles about the R.E.M. relevancy in music. Does a band really have to create a lasting impression on other good bands in order to count for something? R.E.M. started out as just a fun thing, turned into a career. Most bands just stay a fun thing (or an unfortunate thing, depending on the band) But what would you have them be? Let ‘em languish as some indie band or become a massive sell-out? Truth be told, the past twelve years were rough. Despite my fondness for Reveal, I’m not going to compare it to Document. There’s no contest.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;I’d argue you down about “Automatic” though.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Again, sorry for the twitter comments.
