Glad you enjoy getting me riled up. Not sure what you mean by “folks like AMJ” but whatever.

I’ll admit, my reaction was way out of line. Probably comes from a year’s worth of emails asking why the hell I write about a defunct band like R.E.M. but that’s no excuse. I apologize for my outburst, especially the “old townie” part. Considering that that’s what I’ve been on my way to becoming, it was inappropriate.

I have my own quibbles about the R.E.M. relevancy in music. Does a band really have to create a lasting impression on other good bands in order to count for something? R.E.M. started out as just a fun thing, turned into a career. Most bands just stay a fun thing (or an unfortunate thing, depending on the band) But what would you have them be? Let ‘em languish as some indie band or become a massive sell-out? Truth be told, the past twelve years were rough. Despite my fondness for Reveal, I’m not going to compare it to Document. There’s no contest.

I’d argue you down about “Automatic” though.

Again, sorry for the twitter comments. The last thing I want is to turn into “that commenter”.
