Those were the days! (Tempted to track down the jpg!)

Re: Wine Bloggers: An Endangered Species

Yes, many blogs along the wayside, and as you point out, some of those early bloggers have gone on to other more lucrative-- or time consuming-- wine related and other pursuits. The list the Wine Media Conference maintains could likely use pruning as well.

It used to be a lot easier to get traffic. You could post a link on Facebook and almost immediately be rewarded with readers. Doesn't work that way now. Many of us don't have the SEO and other know-how to get the eyeballs. It can be discouraging.

ALSO too many of those older sites were simply tasting, reviews, ratings, and not much story. It's a lot of work to actually SAY SOMETHING about the wine you're tasting beyond tasting notes-- to offer something worth reading.

Wine Blogging Wednesday, which I participated in religiously and I tried to revive when it lagged, has been replaced by other wine writing groups and prompts, for example, on the first Saturday of the month, Italian Food Wine Travel, on the second Saturday Wine Pairing Weekend, on the third Saturday Winophiles, and on the fourth Saturday, World Wine Travel.

In these groups you'll find bands of dedicated writers and active blogs with excellent writing. I hope you'll check them out. You can find links to their blogs on my posts with these tags in the titles: #ItalianFWT, #WinePW, #Winophiles, #WorldWineTravel. Participants have won Born Digital and other awards.

Wine blogging has taken me places, and I'm grateful. In addition to press trips and industry tastings, I made the US Wine Tasting Team which paid for travel and other expenses in order to compete in the World Blind Tasting Championships in France. Paying attention to wines as a wine blogger got me there.

PS I was surprised NOT to find my name (maybe I missed it?) Mike Wangbickler, Marcy Gordon, Sam Ockman, Jo Diaz and Elaine Chukan Brown have all given me shout outs over the years. I started blogging at Art Predator in 2007 and started Wine Predator in 2008. I attended the first and many other subsequent Wine Blogger Conferences. I've maintained my Wine Predator blog with at least one post a month since then; most years I've published between 60-90 posts. In 2020 I published over 150 posts averaging 1500 words. (I have been more erratic on Art Predator but have never gone 6 months without a post).

Re: No Brain, No Pain

I love the connection you make here between your adventure and the winemaker's! Congrats on the new site! Looks good so far, and I appreciate your perspective. Many long-time Burners are struggling with the same issues as you including members of my camp (I've attended 15x since 92 and camp members ranged from 10x to 2x and we involved with an art car, theme camps, playa art and more). I do think you should include a bit more in your "about" about who the author is.

Re: Why You Should Start a Blog (Even If You’re Not a Writer)

I am teaching my college students how to blog today and so I quoted you and linked to you in my post "Why blog?
