A lot of people believed the bus driver should be fired for dropping her off when no one else was there and then just driving off. I don't agree with this assessment, however it did change the way the bus routes were done. Kids were picked up in front of their houses and the bus drivers waited for them to come and waited for them to go into their houses. I don't believe this made anything safer, but from the poor bus drivers' points of view, I can see why the change was made.

Re: Susan G. But oh man, was the big picture so much worse. Who would not only allow their child to do this, but also take pictures and make a big joke of it. My kids have gotten some things past me in public before, but I am always absolutely mortified and do whatever I can to clean up their mess.

Re: http://whitewhine.com/post/15522621811

Maybe I'm wrong, but I just feel like this couldn't possibly be true. There are things I've done out of necessity as a mom that I'm a little embarrassed about, but I don't advertised it. If you give your kid a bottle, they will figure out what to do with, they aren't stupid! And if you don't want to give your kid a bottle, so be it, but don't spend hours out at a cafe. Go out, eat, and get back home.

Re: Screaming Babies In Restaurants

I think it's cute when my kids are screaming at my husband while I'm walking out the door to go to work.

Re: Screaming Babies In Restaurants

My child has managed to sit through a meal in a restaurant and be perfectly behaved. He has, also, crawled under the table, thrown food, and screamed. It is more usual for a child to do the latter at the toddler stage than to do the former. If your issue is with my use of the term "asshole", fine I'll rephrase. All toddlers are self-absorbed, un-empathetic people. Admitting that and working with it is the first step in removing a huge obstacle to the process of teaching children. If your child has really never acted selfishly or kicked a car seat or demanded chicken nuggets (or whatever their preferred food) or never been given frozen pizza for dinner, then you and your family are far different than many, many families with young children. Why you find any of these things offensive (which I can only infer you did from your obviously snarky referencings of my original comment), I don't know. I, personally, have never met a toddler who didn't act in these ways at a least one time or another. My point is, other people should not be forced to put up with it just because you want to go out to eat at a restaurant. And I personally don't find it an enjoyable meal to have to get up from the table and remove my child should they begin to act in that way.

Re: Screaming Babies In Restaurants

Awesome, awesome article.

Re: Screaming Babies In Restaurants

That's exactly what I mean. They are selfish because they don't have the cognitive skills to be any other way. You can't "teach" them out of what their brains are doing. You work with what they have and lay down a base, when their brains begin to develop the needed skills, then what you have taught them will being to make sense. In the meantime, though, that teaching doesn't have to be at the determinate of other people.
