Since 2008, I've gotten to know Bill through a variety of issues. He's always been very professional. One thing Calgarians should know about Bill, is his commitment to early interaction & resolution of issues, outside of the judicial/court framework. This attitude has literally saved citizens, taxpayers, residents & the "Corporation" millions of dollars. I hope the city springs for a keg of AK at his retirement bash. An intelligent, thoughtful, class act.

Substantial local economic benefit multipliers have been ignored by the authors. Additionally, they seem to have turned a blind eye to food justice issues. Local food system benefits run deep in our communities and bring highly sought after intangibles, such as building community and sense of community. Put a pricetag on that...
Again, a just, local & sustainable food system is an investment in your community with an immeasurable ROI.

I bit. I phoned the # provided. It took 30 minutes to just get my request for a meeting in. I was asked questions that had zero relevance to the process and the operator #70134 didn't know about Pop Up Places, so shared the URL. It was a rather disturbing call.

Additionally, some of us from the St Patrick's Island OccupyCalgary continue to work towards "keeping social issues at the forefront". Recently the city passed the Calgary Food Assessment, something many of those involved with both camps of OccupyCalgary have worked on over the years. Same scenario applies to sPARK (Spontaneous Park), which just passed at committee level. Access to unused city owned space recently passed in council.There are many of us that continue, on an almost daily basis, to advance actions, ideas & concepts that I believe are relevant to profound social change.

FYI... June 6th is when the elitist Calgary Food Cmte makes its presentation to SPC/CPS @ city hall. Although directed to conduct a land inventory, they decided not to proceed with the single most important part of agrarian reform. Instead, they decided to focus on an elitist approach to food and Food Justice be damned. The report is 225 pages & is classic bureaucratic fodder. Having read some 20+ other Food Assessments, most of the text is cut & paste from other communities. On their blog, they featured a Teatro, River Cafe & Rouge post. When Urban Agggie Day asked for a mention in the blog, they agreed, but didn't post anything. When CFPC, AFPC & CLUCK asked for a link, they said sure. No link yet. It is critical at this stage to demand that our primary focus be food justice and connecting people to the land. There is a world of difference between getting a locally grown salad on the table for your children and being served an $18 tossed, mixed leafy green garden salad. So, simply, Food Justice or Food Elitism?

When I first contacted the city about my intentions to occupy St Patrick's Island, I had no inclination that our city would be afforded an opportunity to shine in so many ways. While behind the scenes this was messy at times, as the Mayor has noted, it has played out globally as a poetic engagement with a country's constitution at a grassroots/municipal level.
Occupy also highlights one of the byproducts of encouraging engagement, when does citizen activism become too much? Being hyper engaged is great when the interaction is supportive of your position, but what if it isn't?
As mentioned by Mayor Nenshi, the St Patrick's action also stands out as an example of what can happen when people listen and act respectfully.
It needs to be said that the conduct of the vast majority of individuals in this matter was respectful. It is also noted in the ruling that the Olympic Plaza Occupiers were passionate & peaceful. As a citizen and democrat, I am proud and impressed that we did not dummy this situation down and resort to violence. A great deal of patience was exhibited for the entire country and world to see. For that, the citizens, city depts, Tom Sampson, Bill Bruce, Mayor Nenshi & staff deserve major kudos and our thanks. We established a new global standard of tolerance, understanding and communication.

This is a timely challenge to all candidates. The "How" part for my campaign is connected deeply to democracy and my belief in the potential of Calgary to become a global leader by creating a truly 21st century, modern, citizen centric, open & responsive dynamic for all.
I believe all citizens have something to contribute to Calgary and that no one individual has a monopoly on the way forward. There are 1.2 million plus Rod Loves' and each of us has the potential to contribute great ideas for smart growth.
Of all the documents produced through citizen engagement, the imagineCalgary targets are by far the most compelling. It is certainly a "Basis for an Oasis" and implementation is a priority as is a continuous upgrade/reporting on the progress of each target. The other "How" is the immediate creation of a CIO department that is mandated to have an advanced/innovative conversation with citizens involving access & sharing of information, two way & respectful.
Participation by ALL builds a great city.
