Oh, I see what you mean. Yes, unfortunately I think it's perhaps more possible in academia to get to that ideals-over-humans place than it is in a lot of other jobs. This is particularly true when universities prize research over teaching to the point that students are seen as nuisances, as opposed to the very reason we do what we do.

Wow, that is way too broad of a statement. I'm an academic and I know many, many academics who are good, solid people with reasonable outlooks on the world - the majority of them, in fact. But when people go astray and start to view their ideals - and themselves - as more important than anything else, things go astray (prime example right now: the Bernie Sanders campaign).

I took a college class once from a very prominent feminist writer and speaker who will remain nameless. I have never met anyone so crassly narcissistic and unnecessarily cruel in my life. We wanted to learn from her and she was only interested in waiting for chances to point out how we were failing the feminist cause.

Of course this is anecdotal and only speaks to the behavior of one particular feminist leader, but the lesson I took from the class is that no one should be put on an intellectual or moral pedestal, even those who we want so badly to believe in.

Oh hell yes. To me, this is part of being 35: anyone young enough to be that worried about appearances probably already looks at me like I'm old, and anyone older than them who still worries about it is not someone worth bothering with.

This is why I can't wait to rock my sneakers, visor and Eddie Bauer shorts this summer at Disney World - aka, The Land Where No Fucks Are Given.

Fan conventions are the perfect place to meet them, because it's all about context. They are there with the understanding that the point is to meet fans. This, though, is a guy trying to leave work. I totally agree with you - it's all about respecting the context in which you "meet" or see a celebrity.

Okay, but still, this assumes the ability to save, which people in poverty don't have. I'm not talking about people who need to make adjustments to their budgets - I'm talking about people who literally don't have enough to pay for basics.

The problem is that I was sitting in a bathroom stall with a pump operating loudly for ages, in a department where I was the only one with a baby. I only had a certain amount of time between classes and my department wasn't flexible about it. Also - seriously, your situation is not my situation, so it really doesn't matter that you were able to do it in a supply closet.
