just wanted to jump in for a quick... no, i definitely don't think he should change his lyrics. definitely not. it's his message. not mine. just trying to engage in this and understand it better. [video]

thank you so much for responding messiah.

i do think this song gets at issues that do need to be addressed and i think that is vitally important. i also agree that the catholic church is highly corrupt, as many many institutions are. and i of COURSE agree with the freedom to speak what you feel needs to be said.

however, i would like to offer a couple of my thoughts as to the reasoning behind that line.

first of all, the associating of pedophilia with sexual identities that are outside the norms of a heterosexist society furthers the idea that same sex attraction is somehow a disease and on par with sexual abuse. the people who have been affected by the catholic church's sexual abuse have every reason to be angry and to take the church to task at every level for what some priests have done. but imagery that puts the queer community in association with pedophilia is completely misrepresentative.

second, if you truly want a pastor to live by the full word of the bible, you are going to have crazy crazy contradictions to deal with. the bible has many sexist things within it, and includes the usual idea that homosexuality is on par (sin wise) with eating shellfish or wearing mixed fiber clothing. if this is the extent of homosexuality being a sin, and all these other things are not being enforced, it makes absolutely no sense for a religion to be picking and choosing, and then choosing the one thing that so absolutely affects a community. preaching that homosexuality is sin within religion DOES affect a community and its young people. the queer community i surround myself with has been greatly affected by homophobia within their churches, in some cases it being the cause of the break up of community and family, and mental illness.

finally, the idea that what is natural is only what is procreation in effect is false when looking outside of a religious context. nature is filled with examples of same sex attraction, and sex without the purpose of procreation.

i definitely agree that there are issues in all communities that are currently destroying them, and the ability to organize together to change our communities despite philosophical differences is important. but at the same time, homophobia that surfaces within communities must be addressed and taken as seriously as racist, sexist, ableist, ageist, classist, etc actions.

i hope you continue to make great music, and i also hope you understand the effects even small things can have on entire communities.

Re: Messiah: "In
