So it's not actually pointed out when it appears. A film that happens to star a white male is just "a film". But a film that stars a woman and/or a person of color is usually seen as niche. If you're a part of the default group, you don't really notice this until it's pointed out. So now that a lot of people are pointing this out, it probably feels overwhelming.

Believe me, advocates for greater representation want more than anything to be able to stop having this conversation. We want films to be able to stand on their own merit. But we also want to see new stories about different types of people. And right now the industry is suffering from huge amounts of systematic bias. Until that is corrected, we've gotta try to even the playing field.

Re: Forget Hollywood: Vimeo Will Just Fund Female Filmmakers Itself

It's probably a similar feeling to the fatigue of seeing media about nothing but white guys. All of my instinctual baby talk is SUPER gendered. It's fascinating and also horrifying. Thanks for writing this!

Re: The Problem with Changing Your Name For a Man

I'm definitely not in disagreement, but there is one compelling point that I've seen regarding the "birth name" idea. In most cases, this is the last name of a woman's father. The transitioning of a woman from her maiden name to her husband's name was essentially passing her from her father to her husband's care. So the birth name isn't exactly free from patriarchy either.

Especially if someone does not have a positive association with their father or family name, I can see why they'd choose to change their last name to match that of person they've chosen to love.

Again, this is obviously not the majority of name-keeping cases, but it's an interesting point.

Re:

        Queering Theology: Subversion and Grace

My favorite line, "Subversion does not exist in pretending to be against a culture that actually supports our every privilege."

I remember my little "punk" self loved Romans 12:2. "And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect. "

Which, in and of itself, is still a wonderfully applicable concept. But it was definitely used in my youth group to mean, "Throw away your secular CDs!" :)

Re: God’s Not Dead (Painful Stereotypes Edition)

Heaven (or whoever) help the philosophy professors who have to deal with Freshman fans of this film come Fall semester...

Re: The Videogame That Finally Made Me Feel Like a Human Being

This is so goddamn good.

Re: Happy Blogiversary! | annogus

hahaha. Discussion of the verdict aside, the things that have horrified me the most are the reactions of the privileged in the aftermath. The defensiveness, the unwillingness to listen, and obviously the outright hate speech point to HUGE existing problems. Every conversation that springs from this case that has the possibility to throw light on the subject of institutionalized racism gets derailed by guilty/not-guilty debate.

Re: Am I the Only Feminist Who Didn't Really Like 'The Heat?'
