it's true...every few years, the channel has shed its skin and re-imagined itself. it doesn't age up; it says "now you've graduated to VH1" (as the MTV GM told the announcer at the end of that clip -- my favorite part). MTV is in that process right now, recreating itself in the image of this generation. this new programming slate reflects a different sensibility than the hot tub bisexual elimination shows from not that long ago...

as far as the model, i think it's more art than science. of course there is plenty of science involved (consumer insights, in particular, are key here and are a strong driver), but "zeitgeist" (hate that word) is hard to measure much less anticipate, and the art comes between knowing who people are and figuring out what will connect. creating hits is still risky business.

and hilarious on the google/twitter mapping. what will be our foursquare...?

i have found it really interesting -- am only about halfway through myself. i don't love the self-help-y parts (exercises, etc.) but getting a window into her process (particularly as a dancer myself, through college) has been interesting for me. i like the idea of building good habits around this sort of stuff...will let you know as i get further into it!
