Or use the "select a page" link at the top. I've read a few others from "A Hunger," where this one is from. A number of them are written in the voice of historical/famous figures, usually children, which I think is a cool idea. In person Brock-Broido is sort of a cross between Stevie Nicks and Kate Bush, which is something I find hard to say no to.

Re: http://annagrams.tumblr.com/post/2302264086

That's basically it for the note -- the rest reads, "'Silent Twins' by Majorie Wallace (Prentice Hall Press, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, 1986)." The jstor link leads to the poem, which I like. You can learn a little more about the twins by googling them (they've since been released from Broadmoor and one of them died almost immediately after), but there isn't a lot of online info on them.

Re: Edmund Wilson teaches you history

You know, I hadn't even noticed that it's Saturday night and instead of partying I'm sitting in my room reading about drinking slang.

Re: http://annagrams.tumblr.com/post/1043586243

also oliver wunsch and david little, it seems

Re: http://www.sexartandpolitics.com/post/1089688207

Haha thanks! As I (sort of) mentioned, I don't know a lot about boxing other than having seen some movies/documentaries about it and having read some analyses of it. I've always had a hard time watching it, and I did my best to explain why that is. Dunn's book, in particular, made me rethink my qualms (Dunn is one of those who doesn't "disapprove" -- she has spent years writing about the sport and is an avid proponent). I don't necessarily consider myself someone who disapproves, especially since there a plenty of good things about boxing (for example: gyms as a kind of second home for kids in poor neighborhoods -- where they gain mentors and are discouraged from gang violence and learn to defend themselves).

Amusing side note: When I was living in Portland there was a community center near my house where Dunn boxed. I never saw her, but I read a story in the newspaper about how earlier this year a woman tried to steal Dunn's purse. The woman was kicking and hitting Dunn to make her let go of the purse, so Dunn put her mad boxing skills to work: “My left arm is wrapped up in the purse, her right arm is wrapped up in the purse, we’re nose to nose and I’m punching her as hard as I can with my right hand." And apparently, "Dunn was a little disappointed not to bloody [the purse snatcher's] nose, but pointed out she was fighting with her rear hand. "

Re: a bright wall in a dark room.: Opinions in Progress: A Viewing Diary for Four Early to Mid-Career David Cronenberg Films

Yep, that was me. That probably sounds funny, so: You had a post that mentioned you went to Haverford (about that stolen Descartes letter that's in special collections). I went to Haverford, too, so I wondered who you were. But I figured you were a few years older than I ('08), and we probably didn't know each other at all. And you probably still have no idea who I am (which is totally cool), but I remember meeting you a few times through my boyfriend at the time, Ross Lerner.

Anyway, I like your blog a lot. My tumblr use is super inconsistent so I haven't had much of a chance to show my appreciation of your posts through heart buttons and whatnot.

Re: http://alexwhines.tumblr.com/post/461587822

so weird to me you're going to be at osu. are you going to become a crazy bucks fan? i know how you are about the steelers... i feel like it's only a matter of time.

Re: http://annagrams.tumblr.com/post/388080756

never a need to apologize for things that 1) are delicious 2) make blog posts

Re: annagrams

You and Firmuhment have convinced me to try sardines. Funny, canned peaches was the other answer I considered, but I haven't eaten them since I was a kid.

I think of sardines as a distinctly English thing--not sure why. Like, I get the feeling people in England eat them more regularly, but maybe I am basing this solely on their prominence in "Noises Off."

That recipe is something I would have never thought of. It sounds both delicious and like a way to thoroughly disgust my friends. Exciting!

Re: Origins of a habit

Luckily no one in my family cares about my posture. Not that I'm sure what this has to do with the rest of this post, but maybe Alex is trying to make some larger point about satisfying one's desires and the fallacy of "all's well that ends well."

and then I realized I was an idiot

Re: Away We Go (2009)

I read the reviews before seeing the movie and all the criticisms made sense to me--the complaints about the Eggers sensibility and the smugness of the couple. But then I saw the film and felt these complaints were such superficial, knee-jerk reactions. It's a simple (in an endearing way) story about two people who have found love in a complicated world and are searching for a home. It might seem naive or saccharine, but doesn't it resonate deeply with people? Doesn't everyone have problems with certain lifestyles and find themselves searching for the one that feels right to them? Doesn't everyone want to finally feel at home despite life's constant struggles?

I thought it was lovely. It's like a "romantic comedy" for people who don't like romantic comedies.

Re: Is that fruit sour or are you being assaulted by the effects of your hubris?

Yeah, but that's not really how I was thinking about it. If it were like that I would have enjoyed the apple more, like, "Ah yes, the glorious natural food from which the Candy is derived!" But instead I was like, "What the hell? I'm eating something that reminds me of Sour Patch Kids. Gross."

All that finding the referent of the sign stuff is lovely, but the sign is what has irrevocably influenced me.

Also, I don't think we're actually disagreeing about anything. I like that this is what we fight about.

Re: Is that fruit sour or are you being assaulted by the effects of your hubris?

No, the point is this: my appreciation of the natural led to my dislike of the artificial, but that dislike of the artificial then led back to a dislike of the natural. Thus the boomerang. While the apple may have come first, historically speaking, my experience of it was intertwined with the candy, and I couldn't taste it "just as an apple."

Re: Is that fruit sour or are you being assaulted by the effects of your hubris?

No, you're totally right. I get that candy is supposed to be appreciated as it's own thing and not in how well it mimics other food. But I still think it's gross, because I don't like "artificial flavors." Today, however, I had to question how I distinguish between natural and artificial.

I haven't bought groceries in over a month. We went out for breakfast.

Re: Life is hard. If it were me, I'd find some way to BS how this sums up everything about Tesla. How he was like the glam rock pioneer of electromagnetism or something. That's basically a photo of Bowie's soul that you posted. Don't ask me what I mean by that. I don't know.

But this: "Even in Tesla's time, some believed that he was actually an angelic being from Venus sent to Earth to reveal scientific knowledge to humanity."
