I loved "The Chill," and it's always fun to see Santa Barbara in fiction. Macdonald captures the little things about Southern California like few others, I think the Coen bros. are a perfect fit for him. I just happen to be halfway through The Underground Man at the moment -- a sobering read during fire season, though it's not my favorite of his. Sounds like I'll be reading Black Money next. Thanks for the thoughtful overview.

I'd love to see the Riv function as a revival house on off days like it used to. Saw The Wild Bunch there in 1995 with a big crowd, even though we all could have rented a VHS tape and watched at home. Excited to see what Durling and Co. do next.

It's actually "jury-rigging," not "jerry-rigging." ("Jerry-built" would be the correct usage, in that case.). Also, "yarn bombing" is the more common phrase for this kind of thing, but we have to allow for regional differences, and I kind of like the snap of "blasting" anyway. Blast away, yarn blasters.
