It is through connecting morality to economics that Gandhi worked, that Martin Luther King worked, that Rosa Parks worked. We only have to know what an institution rewards, accepts and tolerates to form an opinion of whether it's worth our investment. My own marriage would have been illegal during your lifetime, Dave, and I'd be damned if I'd work for someone who sought to criminalize it; More to the point, employees said this person was not able to lead them, which is the primary qualification for a CEO.

Re:

Marijuana possession faces markedly different prosecution and sentencing rates depending on the race of the person accused. Put simply, we put a lot of people, mostly men of color, into jail for marijuana "crimes" that others get away with.

I don't smoke, and I don't drink, and I never have and probably never will. But I care a lot about pretenses for unequal incarceration and giving millions of people arrest records that permanently impact their career prospects. That's the moral justification for decriminalization, separate from any hand-wringing about who's altered in what way.

Re: But Why Can’t I Urinate In My Seat At The Movies?

This is pretty funny, and a well done mockery of my piece. It is worth noting that this actually supports my point - theaters have bathrooms for people to use if they want them. There is zero evidence that either the markets or investors use some arbitrary "multiply users by a dollar amount" calculation to determine a valuation for these companies. Using such a formula to arrive at an absurd number is especially egregious here because people will now use the authority of this publication to say "Businessweek reports that Goodreads sold for a billion dollars", though that's almost certainly not the case.

Re: Spike Lee -- go see Django -- please!

"Why can Patti Smith whose music I love sing a song with nigger in the title, but it's not cool for Tarantino or me to use the word?"

Well, I think actually you point out the truth -- you can, and you have.
