I think that to bring them on board social media efforts must help them meet their bottom line business objectives. Even small steps in this direction can have great results in converting attitudes. Whatever you do, do not just rely on arbitrary KPI's to build a case for the efficacy of social media efforts. Often these KPI's— like engagement for instance — fall flat when one looks at the details and quality of engagement events. Take small steps, do things differently, and make executives look good to their teams and management.

Andrew

Re: Read Jared Diamond with Me | Bill Gates

Hi Mike, I am just now reading Diamond's Guns Germs and Steel so I can't speak about the specifics of his argument. I can say that "scientific claims" in the social sciences are often best guess approximations to explain that which is observable. These claims are modified as new information or observations are introduced. As people we use narrative to explain the world around us therefore our understanding is further limited by the constraints of our languages.

When telling stories based on science, as Diamond is doing, we take a subset of all information on a subject to tell a compelling story that will sell. This doesn't mean it is inaccurate, rather it is both entertainment and science rolled into one. I believe Diamonds goal was to I further the understanding of a broad audience and he most likely achieves this.

For those who truly want to understand, I can say that one should always look carefully at "scientific" claims and look at the research behind those claims to fully understand the meaning and build our own conclusions or understanding from that.

Re: Read Jared Diamond with Me | Bill Gates

Bill, thank you for posing this experiment. There is certainly a tremendous amount that we can learn about ourselves and our adaptation by looking at traditional societies. My understanding of traditional societies informs my decisions every day. You see, some years ago I studied anthropology at UCSC and went on to study with Harvards Field School for Paleoanthropology at Richard Leaky's site at Koobi Fora, Kenya.

While I concentrated in biological anthropology, the department and degree was integrated with cultural. I can say with confidence that it is very hard to truly grasp who we are as humans, our relationship to each other, to other animals, to ecosystems, and to the planet without a basic conceptual understanding of many inter-related disciplines. I suspect that Jared will traverse many and draw out fascinating insights. I will pick up the book and can't wait to hear what you think.

Re: @naval blogs 'The Entrepreneur’s Burden': As an entrepreneur, you can balance your | LAUNCH

True. I want to know which is the BMW and which is the Mercedes?

For team collaboration, I switched from Asana to Trello, I've used numerous tools in the past including basecamp, pivotal tracker, AgileZen (like Trello it is a digital version of the Kanban board) and more.

Aesthetics and function together make using a tool either a rewarding experience or a burden. With Trello, the simple act of moving the cards around is rewarding. I can easily visually scan a board and instantly get a full view of the status of a project and what I can do to move it along.

The idea of each card as a story helps to keep me focused the broader goal (the why) even while executing small tasks. I typically use 5 list (columns), on my Trello boards; Backlog, Ready to Work, Working, Blocked, Completed. Some boards also have a someday/maybe list and/or other lists.

I also use google docs and sometimes include links in the Trello cards. (There are just some things that should be keep in separate documents). The fact that the cards allow comments keeps the discussions with the story rather then distributed in emails. The icons for the team members responsible for which stories helps everyone see how their colleagues are contributing and where they should be focusing.

Whether this works for a particular team or not has as much to do with the team culture as it does with the tool itself. Some teams are more visually oriented, others aren't. Some teams embrace new ways and tools, others just don't. A good Kanban master who keeps the board updated and alive with helpful comments can go a long way to encouraging the team to fully embrace the tool.

Re: What Klout Really Measures

Tom,

I agree 100% that Klout et al do not measure what they say they measure. I would also posit that if they create an algorithm to measure influence and they are really measuring distribution potential, they either have a complete ignorance of the difference between these two things or are deliberately deceptive.

Regardless, what is important to most marketers is that these influence measures DO NOT measure the potential that any given "messenger" has in reaching and influencing their target audience(s). This is because influence resides in domain. Barak Obama may have the ability to influence a great deal of people on aspects of national security but relatively little little influence over what music to listen to. Distribution potential is worthless if the message is being delivered to the wrong people.

I think you touch upon this in your discussion of ethos, pathos, and logos. Thank you for that! Your suggestion to hone in on influencers who are aligned with your values, passions, and message who can reach your target audiences in an engaging way....now that is something of real worth.

Re: Should business align with IT?

Whether or not IT is grunt labor, is irrelevant (and btw I disagree), they can help only to the extent that line of business managers clearly define goals and work with IT to create technical solutions. An app designed for an 11 inch screen may not translate well to a 7 inch screen even if the ratio is the same. This means that the app developer may need to tweek the app for each device.

Re: Why I was wrong about Quora as a blogging service …

Robert your assessment of one of the flaws of Quora is of course accurate, but I don't believe that a reviewer with "special powers" is a fix; it creates to much bias and potential for abuse of power.

The problem exists because there is no currency in the platform. The answer lies in regulating the number of votes one has based on merit. Everyone could start with specific number of votes (per day perhaps) lets say 10 and then earn additional votes for both asking and answering questions, as well as, earn more when others vote for their answers, or answer their questions. A vote can be used either to vote a answer either up or down. Once people find that they are limited to the amount of answers they can vote up or down they will be more careful in how they vote and the results will become meaningful. It may even be conceivable that a use could seed their votes to another user who would act as their proxy.

Re: Komen Spends A Million To Be A Bully

Shelly, you know that we almost always agree but I have mixed feelings about this.

On the one side, $1 million dollars is a lot of money and suing non profits is kinda harsh. On the other side, $1 million is a tiny fraction, much less than 1% of of Komen's annual contributions, and Komen's ability to raise money is directly related to the strength of their brand. The "for the cure" tag line is part of their brand identity and it is completely understandable that they would want to protect this. Use by other for-profit or non-profits could dilute the brand and could have negative effect on their fundraising; possibly resulting in decreasing fund raising abilities of more than $1 million annually. It would also be unfair to execute this indiscriminately.

I also cannot understand why a non-profit would use the tag line from another very well known non-profit, they should know better.

Re: Funniest tweet wins a prize

You forgot to mention your unique qualifications as a judge of Humor!

Re: Foursquare+Is+Five+Times+Larger+Than+Gowalla+And+Growing+75+Percent+Faster+Every%26nbsp%3BDay

Maybe so.
