The reason for his expulsion is clearly laid out in the article:
"They moved to Canada in 1997, when Dmitri was only six. Mikhail was open about his past when the family applied for permanent residency status.
The problem is, former members of agencies that have spied against democratic governments are not eligible for permanent residency in Canada."

It was because they lied about their past when they came to Canada by making no mention of his KGB background when originally coming to this country. It was only when he was applying for permanent residency (and most likely fearing a background check) that he eventually came clean. It is very straight forward why they are being sent back.

It was the right move for our government to make as there are many more deserving people who weren't accomplices in tyranny who deserve to be in Canada, and there are also still KGB members who deserve to be kicked out of our great country.

Not really, their ideologies were very similar. The main difference between the two is that USSR won the war (after changing sides - look it up!). While Germany went through a process of De-Nazification, nothing of that sorts happened in the USSR where they ended up torturing and killing more people then the Nazi's and remained there for most of the century.
