Herein the lesson of casting the analogy correctly.

Certainly in the case of the CoJ, the passerby noticed the door standing open (the "key" exposed in the poorly crafted URL), and called out to the occupants that the door was open, whereupon they rounded on him/her/them, with the pitchforks drawn.

In the case of SANRAL, let me ask you... If I (and perhaps others) have valuables stored in your house (implied: we have some sort of relationship. I trust you to store these valuable goods) In passing I notice that the door is closed, and I wonder, fearing for the security of my valuables, "is it locked?" I try the door and no, it's not locked. I point this basic security flaw out to you. Cue the pitchforks. Yes?

My point here is not to say "YOU'RE WRONG, SIT DOWN!", it's just that analogies are often oversimplifications of the real situation, and should be chosen carefully to support the point being made, properly and accurately (or perhaps avoided completely).

This all said, I can't disagree with your characterisation of the proreactive bureaucratic response.

It is perfectly clear that the folks at SANRAL and CoJ do not understand the big words that they are using, nor how web security works, and are simply flailing for someone, other than themselves, to blame, because they left the front door open. Blame anyone else, with fury and conviction, and small scary words. That's the plan.

Echofon also has a kick-ass filter (they call it Mute) system. People, hashtags, clients (like 4sq, paper.li for example) which I find invaluable.

I had a bit of play-time with the Olympus E-PL1 PEN camera a couple months ago. Wrote about it here and here. The executive summary was:
1. Not much smaller, ie not much easier, to carry, than a small DSLR.
2. Great pictures, as long as you didn't get too fancy.
3. Irritating (under your thumb) and awesome (under your thumb) instant-video button.

I'll be watching this series with anticipation!

The answer is: You can't. You can make all manner of approximations and send them an @ message (public) or a mail (not Twitter), but you can't send them a DM, unless they follow you. It's a privacy feature, else every miscreant out there could just flood your essentially private DM box without your permission.

And right in Tweetdeck (the desktop version, not the Chrome version), you can create filters that will exclude certain words, or people.
