Code freeze at the end of Q2. Mainnet HF shortly after Q2.

This mentality that if a project ships 3 weeks later is the same as endless postponements of something we don’t really know how it will work.... is sad to see. It’s not.

We appreciate the time they’re taking to this out responsibly. As an engineer, this rollout plan inspires trust. Don’t listen to naysayers.

Re: NYC – Day 1

Love these. I've always dismissed these tools because of the poor quality of the generated code.
However, if it allows control over the source code, via attributes and styling properties, it will still demand that people know how to code. This was allowed on dreamweaver as well, and it didn't replace coding by hand then...
I feel that this is yet another tool to aid education and quick development, in the beginning. Coding reusable and highly customised code, when one knows well the craft will only be slowed down by dialogs and menus.
But I can't shake the sense that this time, it's different somehow.

Re: Responsive Line Breaks

But that's only useful if the H1 fits in one line. If it's multi-line, you'll break the "linebreaks".

If the goal is to remove the Orphans, the putting a span around the last words of a paragraph seem like the best solution unless you have a very specific case on your hands. (e.g.: A homepage's static heading that you know won't ever change.)

Re: “Responsive Line Breaks,” an article by Dan Mall

Dan,

i'm with you; I have no idea why someone would prefer to use the 1st method you documented. But yes, it is possible.

Also, I don't think Widows aren't going to be a problem unless we're using multi-columns or actually printing (still relevant on print-css, of course).

But orphans, yes. Absolutely relevant for RWD. I think we're going to need more and more control.

Check this little demos I put together.
http://workshop.andr3.net/r...

This is nothing new, but my mixing approaches and tricks we can start gaining more and more control over these little details that make huge differences.

Also, recently on a project to avoid really long lines I just used a media-query to snap the container back to 50% instead of the whole 100%. Resizing threw people off, but loading the page normally on a really big screen showed sane line lenghts, which was what I was going for.

Thanks for the write-up. Also, cool "joke" with the title. I'm sure Ethan and the A Book Apart gang enjoyed that. ;)

Re: Redesigning the web, one device at a time…

Ricardo,

I do not share the view that the responsibilities are that well defined and separate. In my experience, this new era of a multitude of devices accessing the web demands a fully working team of dedicated people with great attention to detail behind projects that aim for universal access... What sometimes fails is adapting old models to this new realities where agile teams are a requirement. Also, people need to be aware of each other's role and how they can assist each other.

Moreover, like you said, it simply is not doable to test and prepare for every device out there. That's why I absolutely share the view that we have to let go. We need to give up control of pixel-perfect ideas. We need to embrace that diversity and prepare our works to be flexible. Make decisions in regard to your content, not devices. You'll find yourself laying out rules instead of pixel-precise orders. ;-)

Read today's article at A List Apart and you'll know what I've come to learn these past few months. It's an exciting time for web professionals. Somehow Brad nailed it perfectly. I, for one, couldn't be more anxious to see what's around the corner. Yes, we have our hands full, but the web is advancing and fulfilling big prophecies of old. And that, my friend, is amazing.

Re: BREAKING: Schema.org announces intent to support RDFa Lite! - semanticweb.com

Just what we needed... yet another format for semantic data on the web. *sigh* it's hard enough to convice web authors to take up ONE format. Some of those views were staggering... huge cliffs.

The video reminds me of a neighbour I had when I was younger who had one of these and would take us for a ride... part to show off, part to lets us feel the adrenaline. I find the ephemerality of our medium is unbearable, at times.

A local portuguese historian once said: "Now, this bus ticket is just a piece of disposable paper; in 100 yrs it will be a document of our days". I feel like we're all wasting away our online digital history. Our grandchildren might want to dig around their ancestors lifestreams... I know I would love to. And I have. My great-granddad kept a journal documenting a lot of stuff he did in his day. Fantastic experience, that was.

Re: SXSW 2012 - Teaching Touch: Tapworthy Touchscreen Design

Oh, most definitely yes!

I hope the future of IxD doesn't rely on tutorials and help screens...

Re: SXSW 2012 - The New Aesthetic: Seeing like digital devices

I like it! That, for me, is the key.

Secondly, on G+ choosing who you're sharing with is a major player in the sharing activity... it's explicitly asked. While on Facebook, it's not. It's almost an optional thing.

Re: http://www.brunofigueiredo.net/post/7121619501

The trick about circles is that they're at the forefront of the communication instead of an afterthought or even an absent element, like when sharing on facebook... It's always there, it's explicitly asked.

Like in twitter, it'll be our own responsibility to curate our circles... And on average, real life social circles are considerably small (~50, tops). They'll train you to create separate circles... now whether you always post public or not, the model works.

Re: http://www.brunofigueiredo.net/post/7121619501

Hang on... Facebook has been copying other services forever, but their real strength came from the 3rd party ecosystem they built.

I always said they have been sitting on the biggest silo of user data and use it only to sell advertising. Which is a poor and close to useless service to the users.

I, for one, think Facebook should be scared.

Also, remember how long Facebook took to get mainstream? 5 yrs ago the mainstream social networks in different countries varied greatly and they were definitely not facebook... that's the thing with the Internet, audiences change "quickly".

I think at least Facebook will wake up and get on its toes due to the new competition... and that can only mean better things on FB. They have a tight, very capable and agile team. Now if Facebook will still be the biggest social net in 4 years?

Don't forget that G+ is tightly integrated into Google Search, the undisputed search engine of the planet... ;)

Re: http://www.brunofigueiredo.net/post/7121619501

The biggest advantage of circles is that when you're reading any Limited post, you can figure out who else is listening in on that conversation.
