A .4 dB difference is not noticeable by most people, you'd have to listen hard for it, and even then, it's almost surely within the margin of measurement error.

We cheated a bit and used a plugin that would get all the mundane stuff out of the way - it gave us prefabricated RAM, addition ALU, and other components in small block areas that we knew how to build the hard but we didn't feel like wasting so much time on.

Why not write a small program to take value samples and then have the machine move the bit downwards proportional to the sample that you have taken, for every sample (dot position and orientation could be chosen in the program). That is what I thought of when I saw the photo.
