I found Lovelock's perspective as an "optimistic pessimist" interesting:

"I see humans as rather like the first photosynthesisers, which when they first appeared on the planet caused enormous damage by releasing oxygen - a nasty, poisonous gas. It took a long time, but it turned out in the end to be of enormous benefit. I look on humans in much the same light. For the first time in its 3.5 billion years of existence, the planet has an intelligent, communicating species that can consider the whole system and even do things about it. They are not yet bright enough, they have still to evolve quite a way, but they could become a very positive contributor to planetary welfare."

Re: SOF Observed - Six Americas Andy Dayton, associate web producer

One metric the Yale study used to gauge this is "political involvement" — indicating that "alarmed" citizens are more likely to write their representatives.

Re: SOF Observed - Countdown to Compassion Andy Dayton, associate web...

Nice connection! You'll have to forgive me, I don't have a religious studies background so often I find writing for SOF Observed is a learning experience, as are the comments my writing inspires :) . During my research, I saw several mentions that suggested a historical relationship between the mikvah and Christian baptism -- I thought the idea was interesting enough for a mention, although my choice of words and citation combined clearly weren't the best.

As far as discussing the mikvah alongside bathing in the Ganges; I recognize there are substantial differences in the traditions mentioned, but I was approaching the topic from a wide scope. My intention was mainly to investigate the relationship between physical cleanliness and spiritual/moral purity in breadth, rather than in great depth. I think that, despite their differences, the mikvah and the Kumbh Mela pilgrimage can both live under that umbrella — although I understand your offense at my generalization. Your points are well taken, and humbling.

Thanks,
Andy Dayton, associate web producer

Re: SOF Observed - Sacred Spaces Andy Dayton, associate web producer
